In a 1986 Congressional Budget report, a line item within the Tactical Intelligence and Special Activities Group requested $150 million for units attached to a classified program out of Area 51. The name of these units were 'Special Tactical Unit Detachments', or STUDS.

Further information within this budget report shows them operating with at least 15 aircraft in pursuit of their mission.

Has anyone heard of these units before and what squadron or department they attached to? I would also be curious to know what aircraft they operated or supported.
