I get the reason all F-14's were two seaters the big radar and missile combo that in order to use fully at least in the 1970-80s needed a dedicated operator but didn't later improvements in avionics greatly reduced the workload enough to allow a single person to operate the system?

Maybe?

The USN certainly used F-18Es in the Tomcat-replacement role more than they used -Fs, despite initially planning on using -Fs for most of that work.

But IIRC a dogfight gives the advantage to the 2-seater due to heads being able to look in different directions at the same time.

Thanks for the reply man. From what I've read the pilot could use the system for the AIM-7 Sparrow (even in early versions) and it gave him an advantage due to increased range I believe.
