Russia suspected of planting incendiary devices aboard two aircraft

Or something from the FATE era.

TLDR: Fires in late July at DLH depots in Manchester and Dresden are being linked to the ongoing Russian sabotage campaign. In the UK case (and the German one?) the device had arrived at the depot by aircraft and in the Dresden case the device ignited while being loaded aboard an outgoing aircraft that would have been in the air at the time if it hadn't been delayed. The UK incident, and the link to the Dresden case, hadn't been revealed until reporters approached the authorities.

"German authorities issued a warning at the end of August of “unconventional incendiary devices” that appeared to have been dispatched by private individuals, which “caught fire … in several European countries”. They said there could be further attacks in an effort to damage logistics across Europe."

Late follow up: interview with the Lithuanian hired to post the DHL parcel bombs, including his links to his controller in Russia.

Disturbingly: "When Lithuanian police began rounding up members of the parcel plot they discovered a further cache of explosives, buried in food cans at a cemetery. There were drone parts, too, including mounts the cans could fit on."

not convinced
The bombs were sent, the Lithuanians and Poles have rolled up the network of petty criminals involved as useful idiots and they have their communications back to their controllers in Russia. And it all fits within a wider pattern of known Russian operations. What more proof could you reasonably ask for?

Have the french handle it. They kill everyone in the espionage games.

Perhaps you've listened to JK who gives interviews rather prolifically; from sparse and terse comments I gather he doesn't have the best of reputations among (some) erstwhile colleagues. No matter whose word you take on the matter Le Bureau des Légendes is good viewing.

Classic Soviet / East Bloc spy tradecraft. On the other hand, playing devil's advocate, if someone wanted to make Russia look guilty as hell, it would be an ideal way to do so.

The response to this has been incredibly weak....blocking Russian passport holders from Schengen, UK and other European states should have been on the cards...doesn't matter if they used proxies recruited via Telegram etc.

The big problem is that HUMINT is actually NATO's weakest link, as it invested far more into Cyberwar and SIGINT. Russia not only inherited Soviet HUMINT, but also expanded it to the point that they can effectively 'hack' people via memetics.

My money is on option one. Russia under putin doesn't need any outside help to make themselves look dictatorial, because they already are.

HUMINT might be the USA's biggest weakness, but not the rest of NATO...they didn't have orbital constellations of satellites and fleets of RC-135....they continued to do intel gathering the traditional way...

Don't forget NATO also inherited Eastern Europes intelligence apparatus...not the same orgs and people...but many of those nations HUMINT was considered to be of a higher grade than the Soviets themselves...
