Hi,

the Romeiko-Gurko Akula was a single-seat racer aircraft of 1938,
inspired by Caudron racers, its engine was on steel-tube mounts
with dural cowl, otherwise mainly wood,it had low gull-wing with
spatted wheels and fin-like fairing behind canopy, powered by one
220hp Renault Bengali 6 engine.

Hi Hesham,
No much information, excepted an estimated top speed of 400 km/h (250mph).
Final status?

topic merger time again, methinks...

cheers,
Robin.

The aerodynamic fairing aft of the canopy is very surprising. I have never seen something like that elsewhere.
Why would that be better to fair upward than classicaly downward to the fuselage? If this would have been a good idea, it would have been general for racers...

I think, it was a time, when ideas weren't always tested in the windtunnel, but often just
transformed, or incorporated into flying hardware. And due to the still relatively low performance
of those aircraft, even less than good ideas sometimes may have had at least no disastrous
effects and survived for some time, before proven to be not helpful. Another example could be
forward inclined windshields, as could be found in the Stinson model A (drawing from http://www.acepilots.com).
And in the case of the "Akula racer" perhaps it even was an attempt, to give the aircraft a look
appropriate to its name, as "Akula" means shark, AFAIK.
