I remember awhile ago hearing that the government was proposing developing weapons and such that are shaped like bugs and snakes and such...

Anyone have a link for that?

I have found several sample (post-1)

In regards to the second one, yeah....

So it's completely fictional, and not even from all that great of fiction *runs*

Do a search under the term "fire ant warfare". Its one of the generic names for the idea of utising micro and even nano-technology in warfare.

Fiction ,of course

Thanks for that.

I think robotic bugs are a revolutionary idea. From a Biologist point of view, I can imagine many ways to use a bug army...a nation with this tech could be really powerful. (And I can't say more ;))
I'm fascinated with artificial bugs since I was a child but advanced informatics and nanotech really open the possibility to bring it to reality. I recall an article I read some time ago about a research group working on how insect interact. Understanding that behaviour is the key to build a robot army.

Check out the US army "Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology (MAST) " program - BAE, the lead contractor have pictures of spider-like ground units and dragonfly-like flying units.

http://www.eis.na.baesystems.com/media_resources/ast_mast.htm

The CIA experimented with a dragonfly device back in the 70's - now in their museum - and there have been sightings of alleged dragonfly drones recently but these have not been reliably confirmed.

Details here - http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/09/beamed-power-fo.html - including the ingenious idea of powering them via radar.

Thanks a lot for the links

including the ingenious idea of powering them via radar.

I think the best idea is they should get their power source from the environment, the same way living beings do. The working robot bug nature should be closer to bugs (living being) than robots (machine).

How about something from the world of anime mecha design?

I did conduct such a search, crazy stuff. This could actually be more dangerous to the human race than even nuclear bombs and arguably bio-weapons when you consider how small they are and the ramifications of nano-technology.
