RIP Richard Barthel

We are sad to tell you that Richard Barthel, loved husband, Father and grand-father, has passed away on Tuesday, September 23.

It is good that Richard Barthel's daughter posted the foregoing. If, when a forum member dies, no-one, neither family nor friends, posts to notify other forum members of that, the fact generally remains unknown within the forum. I'm sure that I'm not alone in having noted, with reference to this and other forums, that a hitherto prolific poster has not posted for some time and found myself wondering whether this is because he/she has lost interest, has been incapacitated, has died or has ceased to participate for some other reason. So thank you, Virginie, for acknowledging what this forum meant to your late father and may I offer my condolences on your family's loss.

Very sorry to hear your sad news. Please also accept my condolences.

Your father was also a member of the Luftwaffe Research Group and made a number of helpful posts there so he will be greatly missed.

I'm not familiar with Richard Barthel, was he an aviation journalist?
 
@richard B was member 188 joining the forum in April 2006 but didn't start posting regularly until 2017.

Our interests rarely coincided, as he was more into early aviation than I, but he was a valued member of the forum and his contributions will be missed.

Was his interest in all pre-1945 aircraft or was it for particular types of aircraft or from particular countries?

Richard was one of the 'go to' members for early German, Austro-Hungarian, and Austrian aircraft and airframers. I know that he was French but, from the last name, I'm guessing had origins in Alsace or Lorraine?
