Thanks a lot. I love that advanced tech from 20's and 30's.

don't forget that delightful little railplane that ran in a not so non-descript place in Scotland

yep, that's the little bugger. I have plenty of pictures of the same in an old British raj era encyclopedia that my family has, however its in kolkata and I currently live in delhi

Hi everybody

Maybe the biggest ever planned rail zeppelin !
Luftschiffbau Zeppelin "Großraumtriebwagen" 1942

Here a little drawing ( Page 125 )

Many greetings

"they probably planned to transport half of Dresden at one go... "

..to bring them all to festivities in the "Volkshalle" (peoples hall, only 290m high) in
"Germania", as the name "Berlin" wouldn't have been used any longer then.
A bit OT, but as we are talking about Zeppelin projects : What would have the minimal
radius of the 3 metres track width, this monster would have used ? Probably quite
unsuitable for a modellers railroad .. ::)

Must have been mental illness, or just an attempt, to impress the Nazi leaders !

remember the Nazis had all sorts of problems on Russian railroads. Russian railroads were mostly broad gauge whereas Germany like a lot of Europe had standardized on standard gauge . this was the bloody answer .

do away with all standard width railroads altogether and show the Russians who is bigger! ;)

the rail zeppelin gives you that flexibility. suppose a couple of T-34s broke through you could preserve your rail system by simply flying off!

Hi everybody

BTW there was a broad gauge STEAM TANK HUNTER. Sounds very interesting.
Fritz Hahn also mentioned a broad gauge Panzerzug in his book Waffen und Geheimwaffen.
Maybe someone knows more about these military broad gauge train projects ?
Maybe someone owns this book "Die Breitspurbahn - Anton Joachimsthaler"? And can tell us more ?

Thanks for every reply in advance

Referring back to the first post in this thread, there is a book on the Schienenzeppelin available from Amazon.de:

http://www.amazon.de/Schienenzeppelin-Franz-Kruckenberg-Reichsbahn-Schnelltriebwagen-Vorkriegszeit/dp/3882551348/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3LBZKY7RVQ0LN&colid=WLT9CXE8XSIG

Do any of our German forum members have an opinion on this book? I'm generally not a train enthusiast, but the design of this vehicle is so intriguing that I would consider purchasing the book.

Speaking of Nazis, the "altermedia" website is pretty much a Nazi website.

Scenes from the film GEORGE BENNIE RAILPLANE SYSTEM OF TRANSPORT (1929-1930). This is a technical record of the construction of the railplane, invented by George Bennie. The railplane glides into the 'station' with the propellor on the front whirling. It looks like a small aeroplane without the cockpit windows. The railplane hangs below its own line, above a steam train on the tracks below. The clip is from The Scottish Screen Archive collection. For more information about this film including details of how to obtain a copy please follow this link http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=1341 The Scottish Screen Archive holds thousands of films and videos from Scotland's 20th-century history. The archive contains everything from home movies and advertisements to educational films and documentaries.
