A team of researchers working on DARPA's Optimization with Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum devices (ONISQ) program has created the first-ever quantum circuit with logical quantum bits (qubits), a key discovery that could accelerate fault-tolerant quantum computing and revolutionize concepts for designing quantum computer processors.

The achievement of creating the first-ever quantum circuit with logical qubits is a significant milestone. DARPA's ONISQ program seems to be pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the world of quantum computing.

The potential for fault-tolerant quantum computing and the impact on quantum processor design concepts is indeed revolutionary. Quantum computing has the power to transform various industries, from cryptography to materials science.

Needed tech

WASHINGTON — The self-proclaimed “quantum skeptic” heading DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) tells Breaking Defense he is “pleasantly surprised” by how many companies’ quantum computing plans look feasible — and as a result, he’s weeks away from announcing a slew of new awards.

Commercially important applications will also require trillions of operations on a million qubits, which would be prohibitive with current approaches that rely on fine-tuned analog control of each qubit. The Microsoft team’s new measurement approach enables qubits to be controlled digitally, redefining and vastly simplifying how quantum computing works.

Quantum memory milestone brings secure communications closer to reality

STOCKHOLM/COPENHAGEN, July 17 (Reuters) - The Novo Nordisk Foundation and Denmark's state-owned credit fund said on Thursday they will invest in what they say will be the world's most powerful quantum computer, aiming to revolutionize areas such as drug discovery and materials science. Quantum computing holds the promise of carrying out calculations that would take today's systems millions of years and could unlock discoveries in medicine, chemistry and many other fields where near-infinite seas of possible combinations of molecules confound classical computers.

I think the article mentioned medical imaging. The first thing they apparently did was put it inside live human cell cultures which didn't seem to react to it much at all.
I am honestly heartened by the progress of science marching on despite of all these dark political anti-democratic tendencies emerging around the globe.

Quantum communications?

Quantum satellites currently beam entangled particles of light from space down to different ground stations for ultra-secure communications. New research shows it is also possible to send these signals upward, from Earth to a satellite; something once thought unfeasible. The study, "Quantum entanglement distribution via uplink satellite channels", by Professor Simon Devitt, Professor Alexander Solntsev and a research team from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), is published in the journal Physical Review Research.

A team of Florida State University-based physicists, including National High Magnetic Field Laboratory Dirac Postdoctoral Fellow Aman Kumar, Associate Professor Hitesh Changlani and Assistant Professor Cyprian Lewandowski, have shown the conditions necessary to stabilize a phase of matter in which electrons exist in a solid crystalline lattice but can "melt" into a liquid state, known as a generalized Wigner crystal. Their work was published in npj Quantum Materials.
