This sounds like a clever implementation of COTS. Eventually it's intended to be used across numerous aircraft types; it's not some kind of hail-Mary fix for the F-35

Tablets and other personal electronics are an area where the commercial sector pushes innovation far faster than your typical military R&D. It's wise to tap into that. If we don't, China certainly will; they're no slouches with smart phones and their military-commercial fusion is much better than the west's.

It might work with the Redhawk as well, although I don't know if this program is just for fighter jets or even training jets.
