Hold your horses. Our MoD calculated number based on 6 division approach which most probably, will be not sustainable economically. Most analyst are betting on 64 for 4 divisions + small amount of replacement / training airframes. This is first step, not final contract.

Unsurprising decision really. I suspect the current unpleasantness in Eastern Europe may be driving a political decision on the numbers. As it will likely be a multi-year contract, the political realities may become different, warranting an economic reconsideration.
