Keep in mind that the inside of the annular ringwing appears to be polished mirror-smooth, so you might be misinterpretting the reflections.

The Douglas big bomber is Model 1856. It could be a little later than the site says (early 50's). The oriiginal DC-8 from 1954 was Model 1881, but the Douglas model numbers are frequently assigned in mysterious ways.

Just viewing some of these older topics and found this Douglas bomber (Model 1856)
Does anyone have anything on this design and to what Request For Proposal / Weapons System it was developed to meet?

there's the same picture of the 'big Douglas bomber' on page 31 of Jared Zichek's 'The b-52 competition of 1952.....'
where it's identified as the Model 1155 first version, derived from the DC-6, and dated from 1948, there's also a
copy of the works 3-view drawing...

If it didn't have any US markings on it, I would have taken it for a Soviet design
It looks like it had nothing on the Boeing B-52 design in terms of range, speed and bomb load!
But saying this nothing really did!
Will hjave to look into this Douglas design a little more!!!!!!!!!!
