EADS is showing off an electric aircraft concept called VoltAir. Features HTS superconducting motors working two counterrotating fans in a tail shroud, and uses swappable lithium batteries in the forward ventral spaces. The idea being like the Better Place swappable battery initiative for cars, you go for swappable batteries in fully electric aircraft to allow fast turnaround, rather than dealing with charging equipment on board.

Hmm...

Pitch authority would seem a bit, uh, lacking...

Difference being, hydrocarbon fuels don't just spontaneously ignite. Lithium batteries sometimes would (though I think they may have fixed that).

For this aircraft to be truly "emissions free," the electricity dumped into the batteries would have to have come from "emissions free" power sources. Are the French planning to pave Belgium with PV arrays or something?

NO, they are going south: Spain, its bigger and has more sun ;)
Belgium is too small and they may loose half the capacity if it should break up...
