At first I thought it might be a trebuchet until it kept rotating. :) "Holy $hit" is right. :eek:
 
It's the centrifugal "Bad To The Bone," which according to Wiki hurled it's pumpkin 2770 feet in 2004.

Still, that's pitiful compared to the big air guns. "Young Glory 3" shot a pumpkin 4483 feet in 2008.

Yeah, they use to use those back in the day to chuck pumpkins but then technology got involved. (Not to mention a lot of people with WAY too much time and money on their hands. ;))

but something similar was proposed to launch cargo from moon
mostly lunar soil or Cargo
first for SPS and O'Neil colonies back in 1970's

I think you might be getting a couple things mixed up. I just happen to have the SP-413 pdf right here. . . ;) The previous page shows the mass-driver (linear accelerator- maglev) used to launch the material from the moon. The rotating flipper thing in this pic. appears to be being used for station keeping.
