A while ago, but in essence development of a hypersonic carrier plane and lifting body "shuttle" that was supposed to be "cheaper and easier" due to the air-breathing component.

Yeah, well, no, it won't!!! Stick with a single (rocket) main acceleration engine type, punch straight vertically through the atmosphere, holding your potentially air-breathing subsonic return engine nose as long as you can, let the booster fly back with firmly subsonic turbo engine propulsion to the launch site if needed rather than pure gliding, achieve orbit with your purely rocket propelled orbiter (duh), and Bob's your uncle, just as long as you look up FSSC-16 at file:///C:/Users/Martin/Downloads/Siamese_TSTO-9.pdf! But I'm getting to old for preaching...
