"When Dr. Alexander Lippisch joined Messerschmitt AG in Augsburg on January 2, 1939, he brought with him a team of designers, including engineer Stender. It was Stender who began work on the P.10 project in the fall of 1942, which ultimately became the Messerschmitt Me 265. The Me 265, along with the Me 329 project, whose working designation was P.04, was intended to compete with the Me 410.

The Me 265 two-seat fighter-bomber (ground attack aircraft - zerstorer) was designed using a tailless configuration and was to be powered by two engines. The all-metal wing, mounted like a high-wing monoplane, was triangular in shape. Its sweepback was variable and increased at the wing consoles. Two 12-cylinder, liquid-cooled Daimler Benz DB 603 engines (producing 1,745 hp each) were to be mounted along the trailing edges of the wing and equipped with four-bladed pusher propellers. The tail unit was to be a vertical stabilizer with a rudder (with a trim tab), and it also had a developed lower section to protect the propellers from damage on the ground during takeoff. The forward fuselage was to be from the Me 210.

The main landing gear retracted inward toward the fuselage, while the nose gear retracted rearward. The crew consisted of two people, seated back-to-back in the cockpit: the radio operator/observer remotely controlled two 13-mm MG 131 machine guns, located in the rear fuselage on each side (as on the Me 210, and later the Me 410). The aircraft also had two 20-mm MG 151/20 cannons and two 7.9-mm MG 17 machine guns firing forward. A long bomb bay was located in the lower fuselage."
