I hesistated to create this new topic, as the DM-1 was already tackled in the Lippisch P.13 thread... but I guess this aircraft deserves its own topic, especially now that a treasure of over 200 photos have been made available by NASA on their CRgis website.

The big surprise (for me at least) is how much the airframe was modified while in the US... test without the original fin, then with a new bubble canopy, seen below. It would not be far-fetched to say that they were almost two different aircraft when you compare them!

Very interesting.. I'd have to agree that the subsequent modifications do amount to the creation of a different aircraft altogether.
This planform has always interested me. (delta's & the like)

STUNNING this is why I keep coming back to this site. I had no idea the USA did a follow on design. I must say it was a very unique redesign very impressed with how futuristic it looks. If only they had crammed a rocket up its tail. That would really have been cool!!!!!!!

I think it turned into the Convair F-102.
Well, not quite that simple...

1°) The Lippisch design served as a basis for the unbuilt XP-92.
2°) The XP-92 was replaced by the XF-92 fighter prototype.
3°) The XF-92 test program served as a basis for developing the YF-102 prototype.
4°) After discovering the advantages of area ruling, the YF-102 was completely redesigned into the F-102A.

So you see, in the end, apart from the delta shape of the wing, there wasn't much left from the Lippisch design in the Delta Dagger...

Well...

The DM-1 shared one thing with the XP-92: the planform. But the wings themselves (specifically the airfoil section) was *entirely* unlike the Lippisch designs. Lippisch had a fondness for wings of unusual thickness... something that simply did not work, and no subsequent designers seemed to have any use for.

Thanks for clarifying this point.

I wanted to flag this neat series of blog posts from the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum on the history and significance of the Lippisch DM1 delta-wing research glider.
