Leonardo M-346 Thread

if true, I wonder why some countries opt to operate both the Golden Eagle and the M-346. Poland is another one.

In Poland's case, they initially bought the M-346 for the advanced trainer role only.
The FA-50 order came much later, and their role is that of a light fighter, replacing the MiGs as quickly as possible. I guess if F-16s could have been delivered faster, they'd have gone with that option.

A random choice given Indonesia already operate the T-50 soon almost 20, but then fleet commonality has never been an Indonesia Air Force strength.
The M-346 are supposed to replace the old BAe Hawks, moreover I suppose that the Korean lobby has pissed some Indonesian official and the Air Force apparently found out that the FA-50/T-50i weren’t as good as promised. Leonardo also already has agreement with Roketsan to integrate their missiles to Leonardo systems, a bonus since the trend in Indonesia systems looks to be France-Italy-Turkey combination. M-346s will be LCA while T-50s will be LIFT.

And very important to note: A common wisdom within Indonesia’s defence community still applies: no matter how many documents are signed or statements made, a purchase isn’t real until the platform actually arrives in the country. We have a growing list of MoU/LoI/LoA that never materialized

Maybe...

Of that I am well aware.

Apparently, MUM-T trials involving Leonardo's M-346 and Baykar's Kızılelma have finally begun (flightradar data indicates this Leonardo aircraft has taken off from Baykar's testing & delivery center).

For those who are not aware:

https://turdef.com/article/leonardo-plans-mum-t-tests-with-m-346f-and-kizilelma-in-2026

During a press conference, Leonardo (BIT: LDO) CEO Roberto Cingolani stated that demonstrations for MUM-T with KIZILELMA unmanned fighter will commence in mid-2026.

Italy-based Ares Ossevatorio Difesa reported that Leonardo has scheduled MUM-T demonstrations with Baykar’s KIZILELMA unmanned fighter, in which M-346F LCA will be used as the testbed, to begin in mid-2026.

Leonardo CEO, Roberto Cingolani, stated that a M-346F LCA as the controlling aircraft will be paired with two jointly modified (Likely through LBA Systems JV) KIZILELMA unmanned fighters for the MUM-T tests aimed at demonstrating the capability for the GCAP programme.

Cingolani added that an undisclosed test is scheduled between April and May 2026, while a second test to be performed later will be announced to the public.

Perhaps the Italians are seriously considering procuring locally assembled and furnished Kızılelmas from the Leonardo/Baykar JV and operating them alongside their manned aircraft?

Canada Launches Trainer Negotiations With Italy For M-346

Canada has opened negotiations with Italy to acquire Leonardo’s M-346 as the country’s future advanced jet trainer.

Selection of the twin-engine trainer for Canada’s long-running Future Fighter Lead-In Training (FFLIT) program emerged following a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Italian counterpart Georgia Meloni.

Canada’s decision to opt for the M-346 emerges as the country increasingly turns toward Europe to rebuild its depleted military rather than work with an erratic U.S. administration that had issued trade tariffs and threatened annexation against its northern neighbor.

Last month, Ottawa announced it had selected the Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning aircraft over proposals from U.S. primes. A potential mixed fighter fleet of F-35s and Saab Gripens is also under consideration.

An interesting, and brief, article came across my Apple News feed the other day, a mention that the RCAF would be moving to the M-346 as its transition trainer.

For those of you not familiar with the goings-on, there has been a bit of an "issue" here over the Snowbirds, the RCAF's acrobatic team, which would be closing down after the end of this airshow season. The 'birds are something of a fixture here in Canada, and the news caused something of a political storm, for a few days at least.

But it seems to me this more recent story explains what is going on. I don't think they could transition to the M-346 quickly enough to pick up next season, but who knows, if there is suddenly a Canadian contingent at the IFTS, a late-season show would not be out of the question. Given the M-346's ability to simulate other aircraft, it's also possible they could de-tune it back into Tudor-like performance to ease the transition.

I'll miss the sound of the J85's, but the M-346 would seem to be a perfect replacement for the Tudor.

That will be a change for Canada getting the M-346, the M-346 will be a good replacement I would think for the Tudor and a more than capable one at that.

Canada committed to new aircraft for the Snowbirds... but that will be the PC-21, not the M-346. The Snowbirds also most definitely will not be back up and flying next season - they will return in the 2030s when the PC-21s deliver - https://aviationweek.com/defense/li.../canada-commits-pc-21s-replace-snowbirds-team

The M-346 acquisition would be to replace the BAE Hawks they RCAF have been flying for some time.

So why the long wait for the Snowbirds if Canada are commited to them? It is a bit like the UK with the Red Arrows which currently use the Hawk T.1 for displays, they are waiting for new aircraft as well.

> but that will be the PC-21

Ewwwww. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine plane. But going from the CF-86's down to the Tutor was one thing, but from jets to props? Really? Are we that lame?

Get over it. Worked well for RAAF Roulettes decades ago when they went from

Aermacchi MB-326s:
To Pilatus PC-9s
To now PC-21s

It makes far more practical and economic sense to use a prop trainer than a jet.

It still looks like a downgrade even if the turbo prop is an overall better and safer aircraft.

Maybe ... but enough to worry about?

At sea level, that 60+-year-old Snowbirds CT-114 Tutor is only ~50 knots faster than the more manoeuvrable PC-21 (aka CT-157 Siskin II). Ditto for diving speeds. All I'm seeing here is a little more display time over the field but with fewer noise complaints.

If DND or the RCAF wanted to keep Tutors in the air, probably an historical flight (akin to the RAF's BoB Flight) would have been a better approach. Recruitment was the original raison d'être for the Snowbirds ... but the Tutor hasn't been training pilots for a quarter century.

... CF-86's ...

As you said, "Ewwwww"!

Back on thread, the twin-engined M-346 makes sense for training CF-18 pilots. And it is better practice than training on USAF T-38s almost as old as the Tutors.

That said, the next RCAF fighter is going to be single-engined - the F-35A or Gripen E or both. Hmmm, maybe Canada will follow Indonesia's lead with two trainer types? :D

I really don't think the number of engines in the trainer compared to the frontline aircraft matters. Plenty of nations train in single engine trainers, ie Hawks and then move to twin engine fighters or vice versa such as USN T-45 to SH, USAF when moving from T-38 to F-16/35, RAAF moving from Hawk to SH.

I know it is just superficial optics! Not really bad to switch to a turboprop. As an aviation fan that has seen the Snowbirds displays I wish they could get a modern jet replacement like other teams have done.

I wonder what the Red Arrows will end up with?

Leonardo to provide the Indonesian MoD 12 Block 20 M-346F multirole light fighter

Supposedly they’re the same configuration as the Austrian ones, however an issue arises. Their M-346s are equipped with Israeli (Elbit) EW systems for self protection and jamming.

However, all the way back to the signing of the LoI 2 months ago, PT ESS management states "the company will also integrate its own Indonesian designed Self Protection Jammer, integrate and qualify the Diehl IRIS-T short range air-to-air missile, integrate an indigenous data-link for targeting and cueing distribution, as well as an indigenous light MK-V Delta cruise missile."

Leonardo CEO Seeks British Partners To Support UK M‑346 Bid

FARNBOROUGH, England—Leonardo will seek British industrial links to support a planned M‑346 bid for an emerging British jet trainer competition, newly appointed CEO Lorenzo Mariani told Aviation Week.

“We need a British partner,” he said in the interview at the Farnborough Airshow.

Leonardo already has strong industrial ties in the UK with its helicopter and defense electronics operations, but it is looking to bring on more local industrial firepower given London’s apparent interest in using any deal for job creation.

“The only way to do it is not to behave as a pure exporter,” Mariani said, pointing to the UK government’s recently released Defense Investment Plan that underscored the desire to use modernization programs to support the country’s workforce.

How the partnership would be structured and whether Leonardo would assemble the M‑346 on UK soil has not yet been settled. Mariani noted that there are many elements to the jet trainer program, including synthetic training aspects, that could offer partnership opportunities.

The British government has not yet spelled out the exact requirements or acquisition strategy for the endeavor to replace the BAE Systems Hawk T2 used for advanced training and the Hawk T1 used by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team.

Leonardo is poised to face stiff competition with Boeing, BAE Systems and Saab teamed to offer the T-7. The field also will likely include Lockheed Martin and Korea Aerospace Industries with the T-50, SNC with the Freedom and Turkish Aerospace with its Hurjet.

I would think high on their list would be Leonardo Helicopters (Yeovil), the successor to AugustaWestland.

The British government has not yet spelled out the exact requirements or acquisition strategy for the endeavor to replace the BAE Systems Hawk T2 used for advanced training and the Hawk T1 used by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team.

This part answers my question here.
