Once again trawling through the US patents for goodies and I came across this doozy. Herbert Knight of New Jersey placed this patent which was applied for in 1939 and finally placed in November 1943. Amongst the ideas, it concentrated on the use of tube structures within wings. However when reading through the patent, I came across this interesting phase. "Another object of the invention is the securing of an enclosed wing space, in which gases, lighter-than-air, can be confined, for lightening the structure at times of take off." Now I have to say I have never heard of such a theory being put into practice before, so this may be unique, unless anyone out there knows otherwise.
