Where did they get the idea? The inspiration may go back as far as Coanda.

That looks like they had to double the installed horsepower to get the STOL performance!

Not quite ... more like 1.45%.

The Kawasaki C-1 was powered by 2 x Mitsubishi-built JT8D-M-9 producing 29,000 lbf total. The NAL Asuka/QSTOL was powered by 4 x MITI/NAL FRJ710/600S turbofans putting out 42,328 lbf total.

BTW, the C-1FTB (Flying Test Bed) had previously tested the FJR710/600S - 25 x flights with a single FJR710 engine mounted outboard under its starboard wing.
