Hi,

the Johansen Aircraft Company was formed in 1934,by W.E. Johansen, designed JA-1,
it was low-wing two-seat light monoplane, followed by JA-2,which was developed from it,
and powered by one 40 hp engine.

The JA-3 maybe remained a Project,it was also a two-seat low-wing monoplane,but
powered by one 65 hp Lycoming engine.

Thanks Hesham. That Johansen JA-2 (c/n 201, NC14926) engine was a Church Marathon J-3 air-cooled inline 4-cylinder -- with a power rating up to 46.5 hp. The Marathon J-3 was a larger-capacity development of the Heath-Henderson B-4 motorcycle engine (the Marathon J-3 being enlarged to 1.77 L capacity vs the B-4's 1.4 L).

According to Jack Erickson, the JA-3 was offered with a 40 hp Continental A-40-5 horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder. No mention of a 65 hp Lycoming.

Thanks Hesham. My comment wasn't a challenge ... I just meant that Jack Erickson hadn't mention the JA-3 under his Lycoming listings.

Alright my dear Apophenia,

I just wanted to explain,and I think JA-3 remained a Project ?.

Maybe. But, as mentioned in the Aerofiles listing, "Speculation with some historians is that only one plane was built by Johansen, [NX14926], and was JA-1, -2, and finally -3 during its evolution."

By that reasoning, Walter Johansen revised and re-engined the same, single airframe several times. That evolution may have been something like this:

Johansen JA-1 -- The original airframe powered by a 40 hp Continental HO4
-- JA-1 powerplant may have been the same 40 hp A-40-5 that shows up later.

Johansen JA-2 -- JA-1 airframe re-engined with a cheaper Church Marathon J-3 inline.
-- JA-2 offered unsuccessfully by Walter Johansen Aircraft Co. with an optional Continental A-40.

Johansen JA-3 -- JA-2 re-engined with 40 hp Continental A-40-5* (from JA-1 incarnation?).
-- JA-3 offered unsuccessfully by Walter Johansen Aircraft Co. with optional 65 hp Lycoming.**

* As per Jack Erickson's Continental (Part 1) listings.

** As per l'Ala d'Italia. Presumably this 65 hp Lycoming was the O-145-B model.
