13DDX is the class of destroyers planned by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The above tentative name is listed as a destroyer to be built in FY2031. Compared to conventional destroyers, the 13DDX will have a significantly enhanced network, and will emphasize sustainability to enable distributed maritime operations (DMO), superior information warfare, unmanned systems, anti-underwater and anti-aircraft capabilities, and the maintenance of logistics to respond to new forms of warfare, such as drones and hypersonic gliders that are expected to appear.
The destroyer will be equipped with multi-layered air defense and sustainment capabilities capable of dealing with missiles such as hypersonic glide vehicles developed and possessed by Russia, the People's Republic of China, and North Korea, as well as penetrating and operating within the range of China's advocated approach interdiction and area denial.
