I think there must be some tongue-in-cheek here: DDR is a popular Japanese arcade dancing game. The letters stand for Dance-Dance Revolution.

DDR is now generally called the Next-Generation General-Purpose Escort(Japanese call their current destroyers as escorts) DDX. A few years ago it was also called the 33DD since it was expected that the construction would start around the time, but as we all know that wasn't the case. Also, Heisei ended with Heisei 31 and from 2019 onwards it's Reiwa, so Heisei 33 doesn't exist in the first place. Some then called DDX the 07DD, but now that it's pretty much clear that the keel wouldn't be laid by Reiwa 7, others are calling it 12DD. Anyways, the official name will only be announced later.

Pretty clearly some issues with the render, see the muzzle of the gun turret, for example. I suspect it's just lost an element, like the bow anchor.

It's crazy how they able to design and build frigate sized or above class ship every few years with such a small number. Having that civilian sector to fall back on really helps.

They have been doing that for decades now. Competent industrial planning!

They keep two yards busy full time that way. Not hugely busy, but they design a ship, let the shipyards start building it, and then get to work on the replacement or improvement to that class and when the shipyards are done with the first class the new class gets built.

13DDX is the class of destroyers planned by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The above tentative name is listed as a destroyer to be built in FY2031. Compared to conventional destroyers, the 13DDX will have a significantly enhanced network, and will emphasize sustainability to enable distributed maritime operations (DMO), superior information warfare, unmanned systems, anti-underwater and anti-aircraft capabilities, and the maintenance of logistics to respond to new forms of warfare, such as drones and hypersonic gliders that are expected to appear.

The destroyer will be equipped with multi-layered air defense and sustainment capabilities capable of dealing with missiles such as hypersonic glide vehicles developed and possessed by Russia, the People's Republic of China, and North Korea, as well as penetrating and operating within the range of China's advocated approach interdiction and area denial.

So, that big model, the 170m, has a long 5", 64x Mk41 cells, SeaRAM forward, 3x SPY6/7 arrays, I'm assuming a big laser on top of the bridge, a non-Mk41-missile section amidships, then two lasers and RAM aft?

Or is the centerline weapon on top of the hangar something else, like a railgun?
