Jim Lovell. RIP.

this end of week was already cursed for me and now this News

Lovell had impressive career
Flew twice in Gemini (7 and 12)
was backup crew for Apollo 1 & 11
Flew twice in Apollo (8 and 13) to Moon, but never landed on it...

While sad it's not unexpected as he was really getting on in years and 97 is a good run (He was older than I thought) although it would've been nice if he could've celebrated his 100th birthday.

Jim Lovell was a veteran of the Gemini VII and Gemini XII missions before becoming command module pilot and navigator for Apollo 8, the first crewed spacecraft to be lifted into near-Earth orbit by the Saturn V launch vehicle. He became the first man to orbit the Moon on two separate missions when he served as the commander of Apollo 13.​

Unfortunately, the mission to explore the Fra Mauro region of the Moon did not go as planned. What many viewed as a "routine" mission soon had millions around the globe glued to television sets watching and hoping for a positive outcome to one of the most intense episodes in the history of space exploration.​

He was the last of the Apollo 13 crew still alive (Frank Norman died on November 7, 2023 aged 95 and William Anders died on June 7, 2024 aged 90 ), Lovell was the oldest of the three and oldest living Apollo astronaut when he died.
 
If anyone can make a great stellar journey without blocking the operation of the cardan gimbal, it is Jim Lovell.

I wonder how much longer Buzz Aldrin will be? He was the other astronaut in Gemini 12.

Those chosen for glory are immortal, because they have been remembered for thousands of years, like Ulysses.
We know the names of the first aeronauts and the first pilot, but unfortunately, we will never know the name of the sailor who first ventured far from the coast, perhaps a Polynesian or a Phoenician.

That's true, but it was also extraordinarily fortunate that the oxygen tank explosion didn’t happen in December 1968, Apollo 8 wasn't carrying a LEM.

Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and William Anders were the crew members of Apollo 8, the first manned flight around the Moon.
Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise were the crew members of Apollo 13.

I hadn't realised I'd got the two crews mixed up, anyway out of the five of them only Fred Haise is still alive and he's 92.

On another note Tom Hanks (He played Jim Lovell in the film "Apollo 13") has paid brief tribute to Lovell:


Tom Hanks shared a tribute to late astronaut Jim Lovell. Lovell passed away on Aug. 7 at the age of 97. On Aug. 8, Hanks took to Instagram to share a message about him. Hanks portrayed the late astronaut in the hit 1995 movie, “Apollo 13.”
