State Department clears $340M FMS request for hypersonic missile testing support for Japan​

The US said Japan had requested services including test preparation, test and transportation support, range surveillance, range safety including flight termination system reviews, and other related elements of logistics and program support with equipment and services will be provided by the US government.

This is Japan’s second such request to the US for such support for its HVGP test program, following an earlier request in March 2025. The Japanese government has earmarked 126.1 billion Japanese yen ($769 million) in its defense budget for HVGP development and deployment for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins on April 1.

The HVGP Block 1 has reached IOC and initial deployments. It's now officially known as 25式高速滑空弾 or Type 25 High Velocity Guided Projectile.

From reading the translation. The Type 25 is two missiles, one is a guided AShM successor to the Type 12 (range 1000+km, ship-launched), the Type 25 High Speed Glide Missile is a second and separate missile (ground launched).

As a Japanese military fan, 2025–2026 was a truly exciting period.
A new anti-ship cruise missile and a hypersonic missile were deployed at the same time, a railgun and laser cannon were test-fired from the test ship Asuka, a standoff electronic warfare aircraft was deployed, and an Aegis destroyer returned from the United States loaded with Tomahawk missiles.
What makes us even happier is that in fiscal year 2027 we will get to see Japan’s first cruiser, and in 2030 we will get to see the test aircraft for the GCAP fighter.
Right now, I truly feel that it was worth continuing as a military fan up to this very day.
