On my blog I have the occasional contest where I post a drawing or drawing fragment and ask "what is this vehicle." The first commenter to correctly ID the vehicle gets free downloads of the various aerosapce documents & drawings or Aerospace Projects Review. Each contest is different in terms of duration and award value.

I love the idea behind such contests... but when the projects are not specifically associated with one particular manufacturer and the design is so linear and bland, it's really too difficult to find out!

This was the first one from NASA, not a recognized manufacturer... and as you can see from the *other* designs in the earlier contests, they're rarely linear and bland. The next one up - which I actually do expect someone to get (at least to nailing nown the manufacturer and concept), is about as non-linear and bland as you can get.

'Manned Upper Stage Reusable Payload' from here, is the closest I've seen:

"X-15" Prototype Model
An awesome black/white painted wooden North American Aviation prototype contractor's model that separates horizontally to show the air intake scoops and the interior fuel tanks. Note the duck-billed nose and the angled elevators. The model is painted in U.S. Air Force colors and stands on five wheels. There are slight faults, but this model is both striking and probably unique. It appears to be a variation of the NACA Ames Mach 10 Technology Demonstrator as illustrated in the 1987 book The Hypersonic Revolution offered in the High Altitude section of this catalog.

Is that secondary prize still good? Confirmed NAA 'Space and Information Systems Division'


Now I don't know if this is the very same model, if so it looks to be in worse condition than previous sale (upper nozzle plug & landing gear missing, fin tip damaged).
