Howard-Flanders Designations

Hesham mentioned unbuilt projects by British aviation pioneer RL Howard-Flanders.

So, I've begun a list of built designs in hopes of stirring up some of those unbuilt projects ... or other Howard-Flanders aircraft designs. I would also appreciate any biographical additions or corrections.

A note on spelling: Richard Leonard Howard-Flanders signed himself 'L. Howard-Flanders' with the hyphen. [1] However, the company name was L. Howard Flanders Ltd. - sans hyphen - and the aircraft designs listed simply as 'Flanders'.

In Flight advertisements, the firms is listed as L. Howard Flanders Ltd., Brooklands Shed 33 and Townsend Rd., Richmond, Surrey. However, on the Aerodrome discussion group, there was mention of "a short lived factory in the Old Drill Hall in 1912" which was taken over first by the Richmond Automobile Company and then by Whitehead Aircraft.

Howard-Flanders Aircraft Designations

I have found no designation for the Neale Pup monoplane designed by Howard-Flanders with (or for) J.V. Neale at Brooklands. Neale's later aircraft were given Roman numeral designations but no designation seems to have been applied to the Pup.

As mentioned, the designs of L. Howard Flanders Ltd. were referred to simply as 'Flanders' followed by a type designation letter and model number. The type designation letters were 'F' (presumably for 'Flanders') applied to monoplanes, 'B' applied to biplanes, and 'S' (for Hesham's mentioned S 1 project). I presume that 'S' was for 'Scout' but don't know for sure.

Flanders designations are shown with and without spaces as well as with periods or hyphens between designation letters and model numbers. I have adopted what seems to be the most common style - using a space but no punctuation.

[1] Howard-Flanders' personal copy of Balancing of Engines, Steam, Gas, and Petrol by Archibald Sharp (Longmans, Green, and Co, London, 1907), offered for sale by Graham Richards Books of Tunbridge Wells, was signed in this manner.
