As early as 1944, a few US Army L-2 pilots fitted bazookas to wing mounts and fired at retreating Germans.
During the Viet Nam War, US Army and USAF spotter pilots were forbidden to carry lethal bombs or rockets in their Cessna O-1 and O-2 airplanes. General Staff wanted spotter pilots to concentrate on their primary roles as Forward Air Controllers and artillery spotters.
