The 1960s were era of the flying crane helicopter. The Sikorsky Skycrane could be seen in action in Vietnam while the Soviet Mil Mi10 appeared at Paris in a more peaceful guise.
They were followed by the enormous Mil Mi12 and Boeing Vertol HLH helicopters in the 70s which were also big lifters.
Fast forward to the present day and such helicopters seem never to have been apart from a few Skycranes in private hands.
Arguably the CH47 and Mil Mi26 are able to lift a reasonable load and carry stuff inside as well.
So could the flying crane make a comeback or like the hovercraft, hydrofoil and monorail is it condemned to the artists' impression.
