Gotta love the "cut and paste" method used to increase the sweep of the wing! ;D

Now where did I put that monogram B-36 kit I got going spare... ;D ;)

cheers,
Robin.

Did they plan to remove all or reduce any those Double pop up defensive turrets? or was the B-60 to be manned with same full 9 crew.
it would have still been a heavy beast in comparison to Boeings rival B-52. perhaps not so many engine fires as before.
Does anyone have any performance comparisons between the 2 big bombers had the b-36 all gone to this conversion?
Great images as usual, Regards to all.

And Mike Herril, Execuform Models, has the vac conversion for it. :)

They never quite made up their minds on that. Initially, the aircraft was supposed to have had the full outfit of 16 20mm guns. Then all but the tail pair were deleted, then the guns were reinstated except for the nose guns that may have been replaced by a flight refuelling receptacle, then the guns were deleted again (retaining the tail guns) then some were reinstated. Accounts vary as to which guns were reinstated but it appears that eight - ten 20mm guns were to be retained. These may have been the forward four and the above or below fuselage aft guns or the complete aft ring.

The plusses of the B-60 were that it was less expensive than the B-52 (it was about 60 percent of the price) it had a lot of commonality with the B-36 which meant many existing spares were usable and it had a huge bomb bay (more than twice the capacity of the B-52)

The negatives of the B-60 were that it was 100mph slower, had a ceiling 5,000 feet lower and it had stability and buffeting problems. A subtle problem was that it shared the very light airframe of the B-36 (the B-36 gained its remarkable high-altitude performance by being built very light to save weight. That gave it a limited airframe life). Most of the B-36s were worn out after six or seven years in service and there's no reason to think the B-60 would have been any different.

From all the documentation I've ever read on the subject there was never a second YB-60 fully completed. This photo provided by Code One clearly shows a second YB-60 on the ramp. -SP

Hi XB-70 Guy.
Very nice picture, never seen the second YB-70 in a photograph.
Baugher mentions that the second airframe was 95% complete, but no engines and Government supplied equipment were fitted.

Before it became known as the B-60... A first impression from Aviation Week, 26 March 1951.

I've seen his story on the second YB-60 only being 95% completed. But a picture truly "is worth a thousand words." -SP

Well, the one in front seems to be missing the rudder, and we would not be able to tell if there were or were not engines in the nacelles.
