Kharkiv KhAI-5 (Neman R-10):

While the base aircraft was operational, it was planned to be upgraded into a ground attack aircraft like with what was planned for the Su-2. The KhAI-51 above gives an example of this. The operational aircraft would be called KhAI-52, but Nyeman was one of many arrested in Stalins purges so this never happened. Apparently with an upgraded engine on the KhAI-5bis it could do 425kph (264mph) in 1938, which for an aircraft of its type this was actually pretty good.

The KhAI-5 was in competition with the Kochyerigin R-9:

Like with the KhAI-5 it would eventually be transformed into a ground attack aircraft called the LBSh, though both this and the base aircraft would not enter production.

In 1936 the competition program was declared, had called "Ivanov" (It was the telegraph nickname of Stalin)

Indeed, thanks...so, it says something about importance of this aicraft, you didn't use Stalin name in vain! It's slightly out of topic, but Suvorov has written a lot about it , in the context of Soviet air doctrine of the first devastating blow, of attacking first in order to destroy enemy air force while still on the ground. Actually, it happened just the opposite to the Soviets, but..
