The picture caption is incorrect. The artist's impression is in fact the Douglas D-918 airliner concept offered to Pan Am as part of the DC-10 program.

The caption DOES say that it's a Douglas proposal to the C-5 tender.

It's hesham's reading of it that is incorrect!

I see. Sorry, I can't read the caption. Though it did seem strange that the artist's impression had Douglas painted on the fuselage and the caption text would say it was a Lockheed C-5 concept.

Good Day All -

We recently had a donation to the Museum that included Lockheed's "Lockheed L-500 and the Automobile" brochure though it is undated. Pages are attached.

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Good stuff Mark!

The passenger + vehicle ferry is the most appealing proposal to me. A vehicle delivery aircraft would be very unlikely to yield any tangible cost benefits over rail transport which is just too efficient, even if it means longer delivery time. Especially less so than a ship for importing vehicles.

Between 1986 and 1993, Pininfarina made ~21,000 Allanté car bodies in Turin. These were shipped in specially converted 747s to Detroit, where they were mated to Cadillac chassis and engine assemblies.

The civvie C-5 gets a mention in Atlas Shoulders. Would've been re-engines with R-R big fans.

I have a scruffier version in RAF Transport Command colours.

Yet another Verkuyl L-500 model
Do you think this model depicts L500 with RR engines? The majority of L500 models have JT9D-7...

In 1968, Flight International suggested that the 47,500 lbf RB.207 was on offer for the L-500.
I'm not sure if the RB178 was considered. The attached screenshot suggests the RB178 was a possibility. However, It does appear that the RB207 was seriously considered on the basis of articles published in early 1968. Neither engine appears to match the Engine on the above Verkuyl model though.

What are members thoughts regarding the engine on the Verkuyl model?
Does this engine depict a low bypass option (fan diameter of 1.8m) or a high bypass option where the cowl is extended (similar to that of RB211-524G/H).

Anthony Lawler in his book Airliner Models suggests three varients of the L500 were produced by Verkuyl, which depict a GE, PW or RR engine option.

The below photo shows A-300 paired with an RB.211 engine. This does resemble the engine on the Verkuly model.

I have not found reference to L500 and RB.211.

330 000 pounds ? that's nearly 150 metric tons ! Thought the C-5A was only "good" for 120 mt ? Even for a lightened, civilian variant, +30 mt is quite an enormous gain.

Out of interest, do we have any comparison of Military vs Civilian C-5/L-500 in terms of estimated costs?
