Hello everyone!

I joined just recently here, but i've always found this site awsome due to my fascination with aircrafts, and in particular, with the lesser-known and obscure ones.

In my free time i enjoy 3d modelling (self taught, so i apologize for my poor skills...) and thought i could share some of my works here to pay tribute to some of those beautiful aircrafts that never took to the sky, and at the same time, give a tridimensional feel for the ones that have been relegated to 3 view drawings only until now.

I hope you can bear with my mediocre attempts. Enjoy if possible.

Regards.

Welcome on board CiTrus90 !
Your drawings look great, they give the feeling of a manufacturers model.
Can you tell us, which software you are using ?

Thank you for the kind words :)

I'm using Autodesk 3ds Max 2015 for the 3d, while for the texture on the model i use Gimp 2.8.

By the way, if you know of other aircrafts of which we only have 3 views and may benefit of a 3d render, i'm open for suggestions.

Regards.

Great work, congratulations!

Could it be possible to produce 3D aircraft models with Blender 3D?

Yes, it is. But i personally find 3DS Max way easier to use. If you're worried about the price, on their site you can download a free version for up to 3 years as a student and for private use only.

Well down indeed !
may I ask, how long it takes you to make such a model ?

Thanks.

It depends from a number of factors. With good 3 views and other references, like dimensions and pre-existing textures for the camo of the aircraft (and a massive lack of sleep...), 4 or 5 hours can be enough to make a low quality model like the ones i posted above.

The more complex the shapes involved, or the more accurate someone wants to get, the more time it will require to model something resembling the real aircraft though.

Thank you. For such times certainly quite a lot of experience and proficiency is needed.
Background to my question is, that I'm looking for a CAD software, that I would use
mainly for the reconstruction of 3-views. My experience is really very limited, but with
the one, I'm still using, I'm becoming more and more unsatisfied.

Honestly it took me at least three years to grasp the basics of 3d making and i still think i've got tons of things to learn if i'd like to improve.
I've personally found 3Ds Max as way more user friendly than Blender and much more powerful than GMax, but i don't have experience with any other software than these three.

Regarding the reconstruction of 3-views, i don't know if i understood correctly what you mean and i may very well misunderstood, but i've done sort of a proof-of-concept trying to "shape" up the Lockheed ATB starting from pictures of the model available on this site, in order to get approximately correct 3-views for it. Honestly i don't think that CAD software can be of much help in this process: while it can validate how correct or not the blueprints you're working with may be, it works mostly the other way around (from 3-views to 3d model).

Well, in the meanwhile here are some renderings of one of my favourite aircrafts.

Regards.

If it gives that impression, then it means that i got the look i was aiming for ;) Thank you!

During the weekend i fell for the charming lines of three racers that, unfortunately, never were.

The first one, the CAPRA RR.20:

I'm more keen on real projects, but hey! Today it's April Fool, so why not ;)
By the way, i hope i wasn't wrong in thinking this is meant to be a tilt wing aircraft.

Indeed thank you so much!
The concept was done by Sikorsky, I believe, for the US Army as part of the Army After Next effort in the late 90's. I found the original three view drawing in a report from that project. I have always wanted to see the concept in more than that one three view drawing. It is unclear if it was a full tilt wing concept or how you have depicted it.
Again my gratitude at taking on the effort.

Don't worry, i'm glad i could be of help :)

I had never seen this concept before, so i thought it was completely fictional, sort of a mixture of a V-22 with something that came out of the game Halo. If they were aiming for the futuristic look they got it right, but if it was more than that i'm afraid it would have never gone anywhere.

Just at a glance, i can say that if only the external parts of the wing tilted, like in my pictures, half of both propeller's arcs would be blinded by the rest of the main wing. And if the whole wing tilted altogether, it would just hit the drop tanks. Neither of the two options seems satisfying...

Regards.

Is that a real project? If it is they have achieved something I never thought they would, a tilt rotor I like the look of!!!!

Sikorsky has done a number of tilt rotor and tilt wing projects. Was it a design study for the Army (assumed)? Likely. A real project... Well probably not.

First time that i try to re-build an aircraft's shape starting by a pic taken in perspective rather than from a 3 view blueprint. I don't know with how much success, but to be honest i feel like it's a close approximation to the real deal, so maybe it can be of some interest.

Lockheed ATB, as guesstimated with Mk I Eyeball from a picture of an RCS model:
