Nice find flateric! The Antonov An-178 is a new 15-ton payload military transport that will use the wing, tail fins, and cockpit of the new Anotnov An-158 regional jet. The new aircraft is intended to replace the Antonov An-12.

The article mentions that the An-178 is a competitor to the UAC/HAL MRTA.

Nice project by Antonov, it could be a winner.Because its familiar with the new An-158 airliner make it a cheap but good alternative for country's with little defence budgets

As a side note, the artist impression in the fourth picture of Flaterics first post
is described in the Air International 08/2010 as the Il-214 based MTA. ???

Compared to the An-12, does the relatively low placement of the turbofans on the An-178 create problems with FOD in rough field situations or is that ability inconsequential?

I would think so, whether that disadvantage is inconsequential would be for the customer to determine. This aircraft appears to be a company funded effort by Antonov, taking advantage of existing work on the An-158 as much as possible, as opposed to being a response to a concrete specification.

Here some pictures of the An-178 found with Google Picture Search.

Due to the situation between Ukraine and Russia, IMHO this project is put to a halt or even dead. :-\

To admit the only viable Option I see is once again China !!

Especialyl given the already Close cooperation between Shaanxi and/or Xi'an with Antonov with the Y-9 and Y-20, this type could well be the Basis for the reported Y-X twin-turbofan Transport, which is said to be under development for the PLAAF .... ???

Why India ??? India has currently it's own cooperation project in a similar class together with Ilyushin - the MTA/Il-214 - and both Xian and Shaanxi have a well established cooperation with Antonov !

For Turkey I really don't know ????

Frankly I think Antonov will team with whomever is interested and has the liquidity to back it up at this point. With the number of competitors for one of their core competence areas they have to engage.

The Antonov An-178 transport aircraft was rolled out on Thursday 16 April in Kiev.

Just only three weeks after the rollout, the new Antonov An-178 medium transport aircraft took flight for the first time near Kiev on Thursday, May 7th 2015. :)

[...]Antonov confirms 10 transports as being on order from launch customer Silkway Airlines, "as well as a protocol of intent" with the Chinese company Beijing A-Star Airspace and Technology. The Chinese partners have expressed their intention to purchase two An-178s, and to also consider the prospect of Ukrainian construction of a "transporter in China", says the airframer.[...]

Some information and that picture are also mentioned in an article regarding the An-178 by Piotr Butowski in the the July 2015 issue of the Air International magazine.
FUTURE AN-148T
Antonov is also designing a low-cost variant of the An-148 with a loading ramp. The An-148T would differ from the passenger An-148 only in the lowered floor and new rear section of the fuselage with a loading ramp. The aircraft retains the An-148’s 29.13m (95.6ft) length and 28.90m (94.8ft) wingspan. The cargo compartment length is 12.67m (41.6ft) without the ramp, width at the floor 2.85m (9.3ft) and height 1.99m (6.5ft). The An-148T will carry a maximum payload of 10,000kg (22,046lb) over 3,000km (1,864 miles) at a maximum speed of 445kts (825km/h).

I wouldn't be surprised if this version would be also built under licence in Iran.

Given that Antonov is already struggling to meet existing commitments, I'm a bit dubious.

3x more 178 for Ukraine AF and a new version (lot of pictures on the manufacturing line) :
Well, perhaps Antonov finally have some work to support itself aside from Antonov airlines.
Still, if some Ukrainian sources to be believed, govt itself will not give money for Antonov. Intead it will guarantee a credit from Ukreximbank which Antonov will use to build the plane.
Considering volatile internal Ukrainian politics and rampant corruption it makes me wonder if it's not an somewhat elaborate scheme to make Antonov bankrupt and force govt to sell it.

How does this latest Antonov 178 compare with the Brazilian KC-90 or Japanese C-2?
We already know that KC-90 is about 2/3 the weight of the C-2.

isnt the C-2 also a totally different weight class from the AN-178 as well?

Is anybody able to identify all the versions of this Antonov aircraft family shown on the tables (https://static.ukrinform.com/photos/2020_12/thumb_files/630_360_1609242542-4588.jpeg)? Or does a picture of them exist in better resolution?

If NATO could give them a push...

I see a larger 178 (probably with increased MTOW), a large 188 , an-70 shaped, 4 engined and then, far left right the C-17.

IMO Y-20 has way more wing span that the shape silhouetted here.
Notice also that I slightly edited my poorly inspirated post above.
