Can anyone identify these aircraft (other than the X-3)? I believe the one next to the X-3 is a Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" with a radial engine...

#30025 looks like a modified Boeing P-12E and #20018 is a member of the Curtiss Falcon Family. My best guess is that it's an O-11.

1°) The first aircraft, in my opinion, is a Consolidated PT-3 Husky.

2°) Second aircraft is a Curtiss O-1B.

3°) Third aircraft looks like a P-12E.

4°) The last picture is pretty strange, because Jennies were not often seen with radial engines. I believe this aircraft is the same that can be seen in the attached picture (note in particular the identical tall white tail).

All that can be seen from the registration is NX293*. Here is a list of known aircraft using the 293* number:

  • 2930 Standard J-1, ?
  • 2931 Stinson SM-2, M201 - < [NC857] < [4307]
  • 2931 Fairchild 24-C8A, 2510
  • 2932 Curtiss HS-2L, A2021
  • 2933 Pietenpol Air Camper, ? - N*
  • 2934 Standard J-1, 4208
  • 2935 Standard J-1, 8197 - or c/n 616
  • 2936 Waco 7, ?
  • 2936 Pitcairn PA-3, 16
  • 2937 Travel Air 2000, 185
  • 2938 Waco 7, 7
  • 2939 Curtiss JN-4D, 3712

Obviously the only serious candidate for this aircraft is Curtiss JN-4D c/n 3712.

Don't know if this helps, but in the edited version of the 'Jenny with a radial', below,
inside the ring, it appears that 'JN4' and a cross, are painted on the hardstanding.
A positioning mark for other photographs, perhaps?

cheers,
Robin.
