2026 Israeli–United States strikes on Iran and elsewhere in region - News and Discussion

Not news (sorry!!), but I have a question regarding the F-15 losses of yesterday;

If I´m not mistaking, 2 USAF F-15Es were lost to Iraqi SAMs during Desert Storm in 1991, and so far no USAF F-15 has ever been shot down by an enemy (of friendly) aircraft... Which would make the loss of the 3 F-15Es over Kuwait yesterday the 2nd combat operation / war in which USAF F-15s were shot down (by enemy and/or friendly fire).
Is that correct or have there been other USAF F-15s brought down in combat ( = with the exclusion of mishaps or malfunctions as causes during combat operations) which have been confirmed (no speculation!) ?

Also, are there any known confirmed losses of Israeli or Saoedi F-15s due to enemy (or friendly) fire?

@moderation:
Please do not delete my post but move it (with some context) to an appropriate F-15 related thread of your choice (or maybe a new thread, e.g. "F-15 Combat Operations"?)
Thank in advance.

From memory, at least one US loss in Libya plus one or more saudi losses.

Supposedly a THAAD system got destroyed by the IRGC.

Despite how unlikely it is, I guess they would not claim this if not at least given some confirmation by Chinese or Russian info.
If it was only a launcher, the loss is not very significant. Radar, on the other hand... significant.

Apparently Khamenei's second oldest son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been elected to replace him:

The son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba, has been elected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, according to reports.

If this is true I wonder how long he will stay alive as no doubt the Israeli and US forces will be gunning for any new replacement.

Here's a brief wikipedia summary on him:

Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei[a] (born 8 September 1969) is an Iranian politician and cleric. The second eldest child of Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei served in the Iran–Iraq War from 1987 to 1988, and also reportedly took control of the Basij that was used to suppress the protests over the 2009 election.

He was seen as the most influential son of Khamenei and as a possible successor to his father as Supreme Leader.[2][3][4][5] On 3 March 2026, Iranian opposition television station Iran International reported that Mojtaba Khamenei had been chosen as the third supreme leader of Iran by the Assembly of Experts. [6]

The building where the assembly of experts convene to select a new ayatollah has been severely damaged in an airstrike, from FRANCE 24 ENLISCH:

Israeli and US strikes on Tuesday hit the Tehran building of a body tasked with electing Iran's new supreme leader, local media reported, showing footage of the building severely damaged in the strikes. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in US and Israeli strikes on Saturday. FRANCE 24's Reza Sayah reports from Tehran.

The Suchomimus channel has put out a couple of videos over the last two days concerning US and Israeli attacks on Iran's remaining naval assets along aviation assets and other targets:

Satellite imagery confirms the destruction of an Alvand-class frigate, x4 Mig-29 fighters and a radar site in Iran. Al Udeid airbase in Qatar and Ali Al Salem Airbase in Kuwait were hit by drones or missiles.

American airstrikes on Iranian ports have destroyed at least a dozen Iranian warships including the IRIS Makran which is their largest warship, Alvand-class frigates, Moudge-class frigates and support vessels.

Iran's navy clearly has suffered serious losses in the past four days.

As far as I'm aware, these are exclusively American strikes. No way to verify, but that's their AO.

F-35I reportedly shot down an Iranian Yak-130. First air-to-air kill for the F-35 on a manned platform I guess.
Primary sources: IDF and Mannie Fabian.
A very hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation.

Mi-17 destruction footage:

We also now know that Greece, Israel, and the UK are protecting Cyprus from attacks believing to have originated from Lebanon. Greece and UK are providing local air defense and Israel is striking targets including firing sources.
Reports are still conflicting on whether France will deploy naval assets. But regardless, both French and British naval assets are about a week away if deployed.

Al-Jazeera (The Peninsula) English has a news article out concerning the Iranian warship sunk near Sri Lanka:

At least 100 people are missing after an attack on an Iranian military vessel off the coast of Sri Lanka.
Officials say 32 critically wounded sailors have been rescued.
Search for the rest of the crew is ongoing.
Al Jazeera’s Minelle Fernandez has more from Galle in Sri Lanka.

An Iranian warship has been sunk by a submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka.

At least 101 people are missing, with one dead and 78 injured, Sri Lanka’s navy and defence ministry said.

It was not immediately clear who had attacked the ship, which the Sri Lankan authorities identified as the IRIS Dena.

The vessel was armed with heavy guns, surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles and torpedoes and could carry a helicopter.

Earlier, the US military said it had already destroyed 17 Iranian vessels and that its goal was sinking “the entire navy”.

Sri Lanka’s foreign minister said its navy had responded to a distress call from the ship and launched rescue operations at 6am (12.30am UK).

The sinking marks the latest escalation in the Middle East conflict, which started with US-Israeli strikes on Saturday. It follows Israel launching a fresh wave of attacks against Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps claimed “complete control” of the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran had warned that any vessel passing through the waterway, a vital shipping route for the world’s oil and gas trade, would be “set on fire”, bringing traffic to a halt.

Iran has targeted some tankers in the Gulf since the US-Israeli operation began on Saturday. However, its navy has also been heavily depleted, with its naval headquarters destroyed and several warships sunk.

The Iranian navy had a vessel in region for some exercises recently. It seems they tried to head back to Iran and were hit by a sub.
Further to that:

Summary
  • Sri Lanka rescues 32, recovers bodies from Iranian ship
  • Sri Lankan rescuers found oil slick, no vessel at incident site
  • Ship identified as IRIS Dena, Sri Lankan foreign minister says
  • 180 people were on board ship, minister says
GALLE, Sri Lanka, March 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday.

Sri Lankan Foreign minister Vijitha Herath had earlier told parliament 180 people were on board the Iranian vessel, which he identified as the IRIS Dena.

A ship named IRINS Dena was listed as taking part in a naval drill held in the Bay of Bengal from February 18 to 25, according to the exercise's website.

Turns out the MI-17 was a deception...painted on silhouette on the apron, not even a dummy...
Which is why I didn't post it myself, the fact that nothing really happens to "the Helicopter" after a direct strike made it rather obvious. I.e. not really "news"
