A Peter Elson mystery. The artist is not listed amongst those who supplied a cover for Bruce Stirling's 1988 novel 'Islands In the Net'. The attached image however was probably commissioned for it.

It's an illustration showing how AI gets things completely and hilariously wrong . . .

cheers ,
Robin .
Michel took issue with my picture showing how to cede part of your country by a stroke of a Sharpie as an illustration of GIGO (one of many factors in why AI can get things dreadfully wrong). I deleted my reply for being very, very off-topic.

John Berkey's cover art for the 1972 reprinting of 'Star Science Fiction Nº. 2' (1953) by Frederick Pohl. It is interesting to note when Berkey created the art for this reprinting of an anthology series originally published in 1953 - 1959 he made an effort to create imagery that evoked the era the series was originally published in. The cover art by John Berkey for books three and four in the series can be found in posts #607 and #1,388.

Likewise mine .

Chris Moore's cover for Our Friends from Frolix, by Philip K Dick. SF artists often used household objects as 3d models for their art - such as bottles of cleaning fluids. I have the feeling Moore combined one of those with a picture he saw of the cosmic mircrowave background.

Hello Arjen, I still think your line of thought as laid out above is spot on - nothing to apologize for.

Well, I didn't really apologise :)
I just deleted my reply. Because this is the thread about science fiction covers, and there is no reason for the image, funny as I still think it is, to be included here.

The cover by Eddie Jones for the 1973 Sphere Books edition of Roger Zelzany's 1969 novel 'Damnation Alley'.
I can remember getting a copy of this from a book exchange back in the early 80s,tho it had this cover,no doubt capitalizing on the truly awful 1977 film. dmntnllkxr1978.jpg

Between 1967 and 1976 author Mark S. Geston published his 'The Wars' trilogy. The covers for 1967's 'Lords of the Starship' and 1969's 'Out of the Mouth of the Dragon' were created by John Schoenherr. He was apparently not available in 1976 and so the cover for 'The Siege of Wonder' the concluding volume was given to an artist named Roger Zimmerman. Artwork is courtesy of the ISFDB.

Let me recall that
Fox wanted a Blockbuster for 1977
and need it on "low" budget
The scrip trow everything vom Roger Zelzany novel over board.
the Director not understanding Sci-fi or the Post-apocalyptic genre.
SFX din't worked as Planned and was ditch.
Allot stock footage from other Fox movies were use.
1/3 of Budget was relocated to Sci-fi film project by certain Lucas

That Sci-fi movie was made by small team in England
there SFX team made everything from scratch
the set and prop builder were genius, how resell the metal to drop the cost.
Fox not care about that Movie, they focus on 'Damnation Alley'
a Manager went even so far that he gave the marketing rights of Star Wars to George Lucas
Then hit Star Wars the Cinema like thermonuclear first strike...
...obliterate Damnation Alley

An even bigger mystery (unsolved) is who stole the original art (by Chris Moore) used on the Legend hardback.

The two volumes of James Blish's duology 'The Heart Stars' were originally published in 1961 'The Star Dwellers' and 1965 'Mission to the Heart Stars'. When they were republished by Sphere Books ('The Star Dwellers') and Panther/Granada ('Mission to the Heart Stars') in 1979 and 1980, Sphere went with 'School of Foss' artist Colin Hay. Panther went with Chris Foss....

I'd posted the covers to the first three volumes of Mick Farren's 'DNA Cowboys' series in Post #866, here is the cover without the titling for the second volume, 'Synaptic Manhunt' (1976).
