And I do believe that BAE can't build a competitive radar and even the Royal Navy agrees with me. Their hybrid navy concept pictures are decidedly CEA flavoured.
The NDP is very much about indicative designs to try and work out requirements for programmes, it isn't supposed to be the RN giving hints to manufacturers. If you put a low-poly radar panel on a 3D model it will turn out looking a lot like CEAFAR any way you put it.
 
I would definitely prefer CEAFAR 2 to an American system, it's the least bad radar to import. It is absolutely incredible, however, that Sweden with 15% of our population and 13% of our defence budget or Australia with 40% and 60% respectively can develop naval radar systems happily but it is 'too expensive' for Britain to do so.
Well, though I'm pessimistic, it's not confirmed yet, and so there's still a chance that this arrangement has nothing to do with the naval theatre. The BAE lobby is strong.

If the RN is being unshackled from domestic designs, I think the move is to maximise this opportunity and go for the best-of-the-best, which is SPY-6. That's not how these things work, though, and there's a political aspect to this movement as well.
 
I'm sure CEAFAR2 is great, though I doubt it's objectively superior to the SPY-6. My point was less one of individual capability though, amd more of the ecosystem being bought into. I'm confident that SPY-6 will be well-supported, receive regular improvements, and be operated on a large number of platforms. Purchasing from the US offers a level of stability in product support (not political support) that'll go a long way.

The Australians are building their own boats, but there is a significant amount of British export material and services. The reactors and the sensors are the two that spring to mind immediately, that'll likely be constructed in the UK and shipped over to Australia. Then, there's the contributions to the SRF-W and the use of HMAS Stirling offered to the UK.

I mean, the second BAE concept only requires rotating each panel 45 degrees and you'll essentially have a CEAFAR2-esque design. Either way, I don't think the UK has been moving to quickly on future radar, even if the pieces are all technically there to get started.
It depends. Objectively, SPY-6 - depending on the version- is a fantastic S band radar. CEAFAR2 uses X, S, and L bands to take average of their wavelength strengths. The relatively smaller panels means more can be placed around the mast, combining their capabilities and increase their search and tracking power from all angles. You're right about BAE and the UK moving too slowly. The whole country seems pretty dysfunctional for at least 10 years.

Don't be mistaken, they actually do a lot of technical and advisory work to flesh out those ideas. At the end of the day though, those concept pictures were approved by the RN and MoD for use and distribution from CNE 2026. It wasn't for lack of polygons that they turned out looking like a CEAFAR radar system... The pictures are plenty detailed enough to have a Type 26 in the background. It's because that's what they're hinting at delivering. The writing is on the wall.

If you become agitated, just look into the soulful eyes of Charles and how proud he is with his CEAFAR hat and phased array holy hand grenade and you'll feel better.

Just look at the NDP FSSS concept and how much the design changed after it went to an open design competition. The BMT/Navantia design beat the much more similar looking BAE proposal. I know it's different for an AAW combatant for which the RN gets a lot more input on CMS and radar but using a well known, relatively generic foreign design as a placeholder seems reasonable to me.

If the reason for choosing a foreign radar for their next generation warships was "Coz the UK is broke lol", then we would see the UK MOD launching RFP's to (at least) Thales France, Thales Netherlands, RTX, Lockheed Martin, Leonardo, SAAB, Hanwha, etc, (quite a few Western industries not called CEA do build multi band high end GaAN radars), wouldnt we?
And i really would point that for a "broke" country the UK does have quite a sizable defense budget.

A vastly better reason for buying Aussie radars for the RN would be "because they are buying T26's and nuclear submarines from us lol".

Keep in mind that UK economy doesn't grow even in terms of GDP, while inflation is very much here, and population grows substantially.
Evel less spending discipline is ill adviced.

Make no mistake, I absolutely believe that the UK should be developing their own radars etc. If the UK cannot afford to do that, they need to fix the root causes ASAP.

Of course they do. The problem is you keep trying to understand that by forcing the UK government into a US-shaped mould. It won't fit, our entire system of government is different.

This is seriously off topic, but you keep bringing it up:

There are two separate processes going on under what's called the Spending Round, which agrees the yearly departmental budgets across government. The first is shaping the economy as a whole, that's the Treasury's primary role - increase taxes, decrease taxes, borrow more, borrow less, and so on. That's very heavily influenced by the policy of the party in government, and by the preferences of the Chancellor, who may well be a trained economist, and will have qualified economics advisors separate from the Civil Service (SpAds). Then separate from that is setting departmental funding. The PM and his (or her) Cabinet agrees on spending priorities across all departments, that goes through several rounds of refinement, with the different ministries making their pitches as to why they should get more than their prescribed share, and budgets being shifted to accommodate the government's pet infrastructure projects such as major road or rail lines. Treasury then carries out the balancing act needed to deliver it, which may influence how much money they may need to raise through taxation or borrowing. If a minister doesn't like the result for his department he always has the option to resign, which John Healey did just recently as Minister of Defence because he felt the MoD budget was unacceptably low. With the result that Keir Starmer is no longer PM, and John Healey is the new Chancellor.

We don't let Parliament set funding priorities, that's not their job. Their job is legislating, and holding the government to account. Government sets funding priorities, Treasury implements them.

They kinda want to, but things for now move in the opposite direction.

I.e. GDP growth be damned, buying capability is going down badly, overtaking even most rapidly expanding budgets. This is not something UK exclusive - if anything, at this point, among big economies, it appears only China is only getting more stuff broadly when they spend more. Or some other medium sized economies like South Korea and Poland.

Elsewhere, any attempt to spend more to get more immediately hurts broader economy, prices spike - and eventual result is even worse than the originally anticipated one. It's 100% the case in US as well, where economy grows and grows rapidly, but grows only in 1 specific area.

Until this changes, basically any call for "more" will be directly at the expense of something else.

Hyperion is, from the literal one paragraph that has ever been written about it that isn't behind a Janes subscription, a demonstrator for Project Theia, which is a radar array that "can transmit and receive across a large number of frequencies and in all polarisations". It sounds like it will be a single system capable of multiple RF roles like EW, ELINT and passive and active radar all at once.

Don't know why you'd bother looking at anyone besides RTX and Lockheed. Those other companies don't offer anything that competes with CEAFAR. And it's GaN by the way, and just because something uses that technology doesn't not immediately make them equal.

That's why you have to buy the bionic duckweed hybrid navy of the future and say goodbye to having proper destroyers.

We bought GCS from you, but we're partners on the submarines. You don't owe us anything, but the UK has long been interested in our radar. Buying from Australia seems to be the only real problem here; You're more than happy to buy European tech, as long as BAE gets to slap a new name on it.

The chaps with the vastly bigger order books, vastly bigger budgets, vastly bigger engineering teams, who have actually sold their products to an ungodly number of foreign navies and have been doing so for the best part of a century, dont have anything comparable to... CEA technologies... Right.
The new upgraded SEAFIRE thats going to the Horizons, the Kronos DBR, the upgraded DBR that will be stuck on the DDX, the GF300, the Power Shield, the set on the ITS Trieste, the Kronos Grand Mobile, the set on the NRP Wicher, etc, etc, etc...

And that submarine "partnership" includes a BAE design, an awful lot of British systems, British nuclear reactors, British engineers and an awful loot of Australian money going to Great Britain, not the other way around. Hell, its a BAE design, five of them being built under license in Australia with an awful lot of Brits and Americans backing up the Australians!
And should i remember that "broke" Britain is getting some twelve of those submarines? And obviously you are entirely sure that the replacement of RAN´s F-100´s (whatever that will be) will be vastly superior to whatever the RN CCV´s end up to be?

I don't mean this in a patronising manner, but what does Australia actually offer to the UK in terms of nuclear submarine design and technology that the UK and BAE are not already capable of doing themselves? The UK already has pedigree in hull and hydrodynamic design, sensor design, propulsion design, et cetera.

I understand other areas surrounding Pillar 1, such as access to the Pacific theatre through SRF-W and HMAS Stirling, but in terms of submarine technologies, the UK is gaining far more from the US, who are not purchasing the SSN-A, than they are from their partners in production, Australia.

It seems the principle thing the Australians might have a hand in is the CMS, but that's still mostly an American system, having been operated on the Virginias long before it made its way to the first Collins.

Obviously, there are other benefits, the most obvious simply being money and order mass, but that's not really enough to not require an offset.

The Next Generation Radar Generator (sorry, BAE are nearly as bad as CEA at naming radar) hasn't been built yet but testing has been done on NGTRM. It's not surprising BAE are behind in development, we're in a different phase of our build cycle from you and are just coming out of a massive slump in design work due to over a decade of doing basically nothing apart from the carriers and some OPVs.

In France or Korea we wouldn't even be having this conversation because they, like Australia, actually designate national champions rather than chasing the short term cheaper deal elsewhere.

CEAFAR "gen 1" AKA CEAFAR 1 was the original radar used on the MEKO 200´s, the upgraded version of those and the one´s for the Hunter´s are called CEAFAR 2. They are scalable, you can pick any number of arrays (you dont need to use the 24 arrays of the CEAFAR version on the Hunters) and fuse the data (it works like an awful lot of modern western radar´s, by the way).
The Sampson / Artisan are dated products, BAE is building (now) at Wight the Next Generation Radar Demonstrator that they´ll use has a template for their future offerings.

The CEAFAR went quite high on the mast for the ANZACs, but the fact it could even work without having to mount the S-band arrays on the deckhouse (burke style) kind of shows the top weight was managable on such a small ship.

The assumption that more orders, bigger budgets, and bigger engineering teams immediately equates to a superior product regardless... Well that's really too stupid to give a response to. You don't actually believe that yourself. Please don't strawman or use false equivalents that make you look silly. Bigger company, more money, equals comparable or better product? Please tell me you're not that naive.

CEA only does radars and other radio frequency hardware. It's just what they do. These bigger companies do a bit of everything. Just food for thought.

No hubris here, I just understand how CEAFAR stacks up against world leading radars. And I don't use simple equations like you just did.

Seafire is already at a disadvantage to CEAFAR S, simply because it has about 33% less TRMs. CEAFAR then has better sensitivity, more transmit power, better gain and angular resolution, more beams, greater track, and greater redundancy. The tiles are small enough to pair up on a single face which increases that performs exponentially.

Kronos is making a trade-off for better precision track using C band, but lose the versatility of S band with its longer range, longer wavelengths, but much better weather performance. It's the reason it's still the sweet spot for most modern radars. X band is a strange choice for anything but target illumination, except where you want to combine functions... Again though your compounding the problems of C band with even finer resolution. There's a reason the big American SPY radars are S band only, because it's a balanced frequency range, performance wise.

Power shield... Very interesting. It's like it's trying to be CEAFAR but failing. It's got the right hardware, but it's a 7 ton revolving block that does 15rpm... Or 4 second updates on tracks. L band is great for the long range air volume search, but it's also using the lower spectrum of S band (called D band in IEEE terms) so it can't take advantage of the upper strengths of S band. Bit Lame. Both the Thales and Leonardo systems claim to be modular, but they just aren't. They're seperated and clunky and compromised by being too focused.

CEAFAR2 is a fully modular and scalable architecture naval radar. The tiles are there and you can build it according to your needs. L band, S band, and X band (transmit only). Like a tailored suit. The data is parallel processed by tiles and then enhanced in system processing. It's truly integrated and works together. No one has said it yet, but it bears the hallmarks of a 5th gen radar. The world's first operational GaN naval radar too by the way.

I can admit that CEA are terrible at naming. But these people are electrical engineers. Marketing is the furthest thing from their mind

It's true, we don't offer much in terms of nuclear submarine design, but when Aukus was born, our requirements for a submarine then had to be taken into consideration for the advanced work done on SSN-R. So there was a little bit of re-baselining the new Aukus boat. And because we use a lot of US systems, that's where the UK is getting that tech from to fill that requirement.

The CMS is one that we jointly developed with the US which was introduced on the Virginia's and the Collins around a similar time. You can read about it on Wikipedia, it's quite interesting actually.

So we aren't totally clueless when it comes to submarine design and technology. We know what we want and we want the best... But unfortunately we're stuck with the UK... /s /jk

SSN-Aukus used the advanced work of the SSN-R programme but it is most definitely a partnership of requirements and final design. And we're paying our way... Not many, if any, countries get access to the crown jewels of naval hardware. Unless you were friends with the Soviets and could get in on the fire sale.

Broke Britain is buying 12 submarines... Crewing then might be an issue. But they're also giving up naval destroyers because they can't afford them... Even though they think the hybrid navy will bring mass and do it cheaper. And I know our Hobarts and the Type 45s will be superior to the CCV. Whatever we replace them with will only extend that lead.

Manageable by adding significant ballast to the Anzac, while Hunter grew significantly in beam and displacement to manage increased top weight from the parent T26 design.

I’m not disputing the capabilities of the system, but its mass has driven design changes and compromises in its various installations to date.

I may be several years behind the times, but I was under the impression that the British SSN-AUKUS would use our own sensors and CMS, where at least in the former we are supposed to be very capable, while the Australians would use the US-derived one. Has that changed or is it all ambiguous?

As above, all three Aukus partners are settling on the AN/BYG-1. It makes it far less complicated. But the Australian and UK versions will integrate some European sensors, but our boats should be identical.

Well, given the USN and RAN already used AN/BYG-1, I expect the modifications will be British to accommodate British sonars and torpedoes.
Yeah, obviously the British will need their bits integrated, and we'll likely operate an AUKUS version, but we'll also get upgrades and updates that the yanks get as well.

I'm probably not being clear in what I'm saying, so I apologise for that.

This will make our boats and crews interoperable and will avoid any headaches in construction. We'll also improve our supply chains and reduce costs on purchased systems the more we buy. Ah OK I was mistaking AN/BYG-1's system flexibility for freedom within the programme. Barring some very odd decision making S2176 it is then.
 
Manageable by adding significant ballast to the Anzac, while Hunter grew significantly in beam and displacement to manage increased top weight from the parent T26 design.

I’m not disputing the capabilities of the system, but its mass has driven design changes and compromises in its various installations to date.
Indeed. The Anzac quarterdeck had to be enclosed because with the ballast the ships sat lower in the water, & speed dropped - & I wouldn't be surprised if range also did.
