? why? cant Indonesia buy the new Russian AAMs or even American AAMs?

We already have good relationships with the Indians for our Flankers. Also, geopolitical issues and CAATSA.

It's not finalized yet, we'll see what happens.

Depends on how much we want to spend. We could end up getting both, if we’re willing to. If we are, then I can expect an integration for the Su-27SKMs as well in addition to the Su-30MK2s.


In addition, does India have a reduced range / dumbed down weapon policy export? If so, then it changes the things a bit.

I'm not aware of any policy as such to downgrade export versions. Regarding the BrahMos though, only the 290 km version will be exported AFAIK, not the 450 km or 800 km versions. But that's because of MTCR (India became a signatory in 2016) rather than any national policy.

I don't doubt that exceptions can & will be made however, given it's not a binding treaty.

Finally!

Philippines, Indonesia are done and I guess Vietnam is next. BrahMos is becoming a staple SSM in SE Asia. A proven track record of reliably penetrating airspace defended by HQ-9/HQ-16 variants (naval versions of which form the AAW cover of most PLAN combatants as well) in last year's skirmish certainly helps.

There've been reports that UAE is considering a purchase as well.

What's surprising is that none of the Flanker-operating counries in SE Asia have yet broached the option for the ALCM version. That opens up a lot more flexibility, but they'll have to bring the jets down to HAL for some minor airframe modifications to certify centreline carriage.

As far as I know no. The brahmos got the 290km range cause MTCR but i dont think any of the systems exported to armenia were the dumbed down version of the domestic system.

This may change in the future as India produces more domestic systems and exports more but right now they're all the same.

Indonesia case, it’s all about commitment and money. Malaysia isn’t having a good situation with their Su-30MKMs, and I guess they’re on their way out. For Vietnam, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a domestic project underway.

perhaps theyre waiting for the brahmos-NG to mature before the ALCM version is considered. After all the NG will add the capability to all the su30s within IAF service rather than the 40 or so that the IAF has today.

M1 reportedly has a ~150 km range. Originally the M1 wasn't supposed to be packing a booster stage but now it does. It appears the booster too has TVC vanes & actuated rear fins.

The Kusha family of M1, M2 & M3 variants, known under various program designations as LRSAM, XRSAM, ERADS etc., are essentially an indigenous successor to the S-400. M2 & M3 are meant to have a dual-seeker arrangement. Not sure how it'll be implemented.
