Remember that I'm reflecting back on WW1 and WW2 gun arrangements. 3" guns versus torpedo boats aka USVs, 30mm Mk38Mod4 in place of various medium-caliber Hotchkiss revolving cannon versus unfriendly natives in small boats. RIM-116 launchers in place of dual-purpose 5" secondaries for own-ship air defense (the 3" guns mounted are dual-purpose).
Problem is that RIM-116s are much shorter range than the old 5"/38s. The 5"/38s could reach out to nearly 16km or up to 37,000ft. There's no missile with roughly that range currently in use, so I guess that's the next stretch in the RIM-116 missile development. Get the RIM-116s out to the same range as the old 5"/38s: ~30,000ft at 5km or less.
i am not so sure why the 76 mm couldn't sit at a deck level that would not have allowed the 57 mm to operate, too.
The one place I know you can stick a 76mm Sovraponte but not a 57mm is on top of a helicopter hangar. Because the Sovraponte sits entirely on top of the deck with no penetration at all.
Any other location the two are broadly comparable in terms of volume needed. (Under deck volume being determined more by the need for humans to get inside the magazines and move ammo around to the loaders)
That said, the OTO 76mm is only about 17,000lbs while the Bofors 57mm is 31,000lbs. So there's a topweight advantage to the 76mm.
The largest ships should have 5 inch or larger guns. If a ship cannot operate the 5 inch then it should operate a 3 inch AND 57 mm if it cannot operate 3 inch then it should operate 57 mm and Bushmaster Anything too small for the 57 mm should at least operate a Bushmaster and pintel mounts, preferably with enhancements to targeting. Large guns are versatile and underappreciated.
The
real nuisance of course is that 57mm Mk110, OTO 76mm Strales/DART,
and RIM-116
all engage at about 8km versus flying targets.
Also, the 76 and 57 have about the same range (~16km), until the Vulcano guided rounds come into play (~40km).
Nobody was talking about 76mm, we were talking about guided rounds for 57mm such as ALAMO and ORKA. 57mm gun already planned for the USN project in this thread.
Problem: way back in WW2 it was discovered that a 40mm 0.9kg shell wasn't big enough to kinematically stop an incoming kamikaze/guided missile. Even if you killed the pilot/guidance the missile would still travel a ballistic course and hit the ship.
57mm is not that much larger, it's a 2.4kg shell (for the prefragmented shells). While a 76mm is throwing 6.3kg.

If I got full carte-blanche to design the defenses of the BBGX, I'd give it 4x RAM launchers, 6x 76mm, 4x 30mm CIWS, and 4x-6x 30mm Mk38. Plus at least 2x Lasers and 2x HPMW zappers.
