I'm tired of seeing clumsy automatons climbing stairs and rap dancing while journalists pretend to take pictures of them. I wonder what Japanese scientists have been doing in the field of military robotics for the past forty years.

So far they have not been able to show their progress, but perhaps now we can know what a Takahichi Katana Mk. VII looks like.;)
 
Perhaps they're secretly testing prototypes in in the Russo-Ukrainian war, there's nothing an actual live, hostile field test.

This could be the spark that helps Japan’s Big Tech firms regain their momentum. However, we must realistically assess Japan's current global standing in terms of technological prowess.

As recent news suggests, Japan has suffered significant defeats against the US and China in software-centric fields, particularly in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and neural networks. This gap won’t be easy to close, and it stems from a clear failure to commit fully to DRL investment in the past.

That said, Japan is by no means lacking in engineers capable of researching and developing these models. Numerous startups are pursuing humanoid development, alongside giants like Murata Manufacturing, Honda, and SoftBank. In fact, some companies have already succeeded in developing fairly impressive models.

You might feel that Japanese companies are surprisingly quiet about their technological milestones. Part of this is simply because some startups are still in their early stages, but a much larger factor is the extreme secrecy of major corporations. For instance, Honda—the creator of ASIMO—is notoriously tight-lipped; even their announcement regarding a small reusable rocket came completely out of the blue. Another reason for the lack of public updates is that companies like Murata are aiming for disaster-relief humanoids. Because the stakes are so high for such life-saving applications, the development hurdles are naturally steeper and require more time to clear.

As a side note, Murata Manufacturing plans to build a prototype of a small robot (about 120 cm tall) by March 2026. Following that, they aim to develop a disaster-response humanoid by the end of 2026, standing 250 cm tall and capable of lifting over 50 kg.
 
That doesn't seem very dangerous, in my opinion the key is in the batteries. The problem is that if any technological power has managed to develop an efficient battery for military robotic use, it would be a strategic secret while we continue to make a fool of ourselves with inefficient electric cars.

That breakthrough battery will likely be a solid-state battery. They are safer and longer-lasting than lithium-ion batteries.

China can be pretty secretive as well. If there was no SpaceX--they would certainly be in the lead.

Perhaps I am projecting--but in spaceflight at least--adversity seems to play a part. People in Huntsville, Alabama went from dirt-farmers to the Moon....the Soviets led the space race with a nation still in ruin...in 1976 you could not find a consumer car in China.

For any kind of tech--there has to be passion. It seems like the better fed a nation is --the sleepier it becomes.

I hope this changes. There will never be a Gundam--but Japan could easily build Truax's Sea Dragon and shock the world.

But that takes "want-to" as much as "can-do."
