There might be another 6 Iris-T SLM Units that are going to Ukraine in the future. That would make a total of 14 Systems for them tought this still is quite vague and the original source might not exist...

While we wait for conformation for the 6 new systems atleast the Bundeswehr achieved today IOC for Iris-T SLM.
Honestly if i understood it correctly IOC wasn't gonna happen before Q2-4 2025 tough maybe that was for FOC. Still its a very fast time for the Bundeswehr

MILAN — The Danish government has opted to procure three different types of ground-based air defense systems from German, French, and Norwegian manufacturers as the country seeks to urgently fill critical air defense gaps.

The decision comes almost two decades after Denmark decommissioned its ground-based air defense capability, in 2005, in an attempt to focus more on international operations. The void has left the Scandinavian country vulnerable to potential missile attacks, the thinking in Copenhagen goes.

As a short-term solution, the Danish Ministry of Defense announced earlier this summer that it would purchase the Iris-T surface-launched medium-range system from Germany-based Diehl Defence and the VL Mica from French manufacturer MBDA.

Additionally, it will lease a NASAMS system from Norwegian company Kongsberg, to serve as a “temporary capability” until it selects a permanent air defense system contender later this year.

How does the SLM achieve its >20km maximum altitude? Compared to similar missiles like the ESSM or CAMM-ER with the same horizontal range (40-50km), the SLM has double the maximum altitude.

I assumed that it was a more powerful rocket motor, but the maximum speed of the SLM is disclosed as being roughly the same as the CAMM-ER and less than the ESSM.

Longer-running booster?

It's intercept altitude for the SLM while it's flight altitude for the CAMM-ER. Two very different things of two different flight profiles.

I apologise if this is straight forward information, but could you explain the difference between the two?

Denmark procures additional IRIS-T SLM fire units

As part of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), Denmark procured additional fire units for the IRIS-T SLM medium-range ground-based air defence system. The corresponding contract was signed in Coblenz on December 4, 2025.

As part of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), Denmark procured additional fire units for the IRIS-T SLM medium-range ground-based air defence system. The corresponding contract was signed in Coblenz on December 4, 2025. Denmark thus strengthens its Surface Based Air and Missile Defense (SBAMD). In addition to the civilian population, also armed forces and critical infrastructure are protected from airborne threats.
Back in July this year, the Danish Ministry of Defence opted for the combat-proven IRIS-T SLM system from Diehl Defence in its procurement process for an interim air defence solution. The current contract is the so-called "SBAMD Permanent Solution". Diehl Defence is proud that Denmark, as an existing customer, has once again decided to procure a solution from the systems house to close its capability gap.
The ESSI standard contract was used again, which enables an accelerated and unbureaucratic procurement process. A total of eleven countries, including Denmark, have already opted for the air defence solution from Diehl Defence. Thanks to the constant expansion of the ESSI user countries and their joint procurement, synergies are being created that are very valuable and can be used for the future.
The IRIS-T SLM system is designed for countering threats posed by enemy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones at a range of up to 40 km and an altitude of up to 20 km. An IRIS-T SLM fire unit consists of the components missile launcher, radar and tactical operations center. The system is characterized by its real 360°-coverage, high tactical mobility, deployability of the missile launchers and multiple target engagement with low personnel requirement. According to the customer, the system achieves a very high hit rate even during waves of attack with more than 15 targets.
By now, the IRIS-T family comprises 21 user countries: They have already procured or commissioned the procurement of the air-to-air guided missile IRIS-T or one of Diehl Defence's IRIS-T GBAD systems and thus rely on the outstanding performance of IRIS-T based products.

It is really incredible how much better the IrisT SLM system sells then similar systems in Europe.

While sells did start good before in the international market but it being a part of the ukraine war while being highly effectiv paid off

There's nothing like effective use in real combat as a marketing tool, it buys the kind of publicity you can't get in peace time.

It also tells you everything you need to know to develop the system further in real time and in this case even against mosts current threat

Yeah, actual combat use to expose both hidden flaws and hidden benefits not revealed in formal tests.

Denmark also signed for additionnal VL MICA betteries today
In July 2025, FMI signed a contract with the supplier for two VL MICA systems for the initial development of Denmark's ground-based air defense.

With the new contract, a number of new VL MICA systems will be procured for the permanent ground-based air defense.

> "sowie gegen Drohnen verschiedener Klassen. Das System IRIS-T SLM, welches den MRAD-Bereich abdeckt, ist auf die Abwehr von Bedrohungen mit einer effektiven Reichweite von bis zu 60 km und einer Höhe von 20 km ausgelegt."
Range increased to 60km?

> "Kapazitäten zur Produktion sowohl von Systemen als auch von Munition, denn zu jedem System IRIS-T SLM sollen tausende Lenkflugkörper beschafft werden, um die Luftverteidigung der Bundeswehr auf eine solide Basis zu stellen."
Thousands of IRIS-T SLM missiles for each system would be very good but also so expensive...

There now open to another 25 Systems to the existing goal of 50 for a total of 75 possible IRIS-T batteries.

Remember that's IRIS-T SLM, it doesn't include the Bundesheer's IRIS-T SLS on Boxer FlaRakPz already being procured as part of NNBs (Nah- und Nächstbereichsschutz/Close and Very Close Area Protection). The change is that rather than the IRIS-T SLM element of NNBs being run by the Luftwaffe for the Bundesheer, the Bundesheer now wants to run it itself, with its own IRIS-T SLM fire units.
