The ship was scuttled in June 2020 because the insurers determined the ship was beyond economic repair, the cargo and fuel oil had been removed, the generators left running to burn up the remaining fuel in the fuel lines. Of note, the lifeboat's hydrostatic release mechanism worked and it was salvaged for reuse...

Why not just scrap the ship?

I think they managed to get fully compensation from the insurance company and didn't even try to save the vessel. The rear end is the most expensive part of the ship and even if the rest was scrap, it might have been reusable (only four years in service). The running generator implies, that is wasn't flooded.

This way, a lot of lawyer cost were spared which can easily surpass the cost of 50.000 t of steel...

Thar she goes...

Roughly 2700 meters (1476.378 fathoms) deep

Well, at 8,858ft deep the wreck will definitely NOT be an artificial-reef for recreational SCUBA-diving by tourists (Unless they're visiting by specialised deep-sea submersibles like the Alvin, just make sure it isn't run by someone like Stockton Rush;):D).

Apart from the Big Fitz in the Great Lakes and maybe El Faro, also-ran working ships just don't get the attention liners or battleships, or galleons get.

It is just as well.

If you were to ask the average passerby to name two cargo ships...*maybe*...they could name Cyclops or Marine Sulfur Queen only because they heard the names from History Channel woo.
