Regulations nearly as bad as California (and worse in some cases), many politicians that want nothing to do with anything military... There's a huge list. Hell, they offered support when Olympia, Washington refused the Namesake Visit from the US Navy and crew of USS Olympia the submarine.

Which is ironic, because basically everyone outside Portland-Eugene area is more reasonable.

WASHINGTON — The dramatic drop in launch costs since the early aughts could chop the price of developing and deploying space-based interceptors (SBI) by 30-40 percent, according to an initial analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

A lot of existing efforts were already in play for missile detection and tracking. There already was a plan for new satellite systems in several orbital regimes. What was far behind was an effective means of intercepting.

Defense Updates has put out a video about Trump's proposed "Golden Dome" defence system:

In January 2025, President Donald Trump announced a bold initiative to strengthen America's defenses against a new generation of missile threats with the launch of the "Golden Dome"—a comprehensive missile defense system. Drawing inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome and echoing the vision of Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, the Golden Dome is designed to create a layered shield capable of intercepting ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic missiles, as well as potential orbital strike systems.
Underscoring the urgency of the mission, President Trump declared that the United States must not fall behind in missile defense capabilities. To lead the initiative, U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein has been appointed project head. He will oversee coordination among military and industry stakeholders, including Lockheed Martin, which is targeting delivery of the first defensive systems by the end of next year—mobilizing American innovation and industrial capacity at an unprecedented scale.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes how President Trump’s Golden Dome could provide US with a robust protective umbrella?

Missile Defense Agency’s long-range radar tracks ICBM test target for first time

NORTHCOM has been impatiently awaiting the LRDR, considering it a critical capability for defense of the homeland. The S-band radar’s primary purpose is to distinguish between ICBMs launched by adversarial nations towards the US and decoys or other innocuous objects moving through space. LRDR also is designed to keep better tabs on jinking hypersonic missiles.

I wonder if GPI will be small enough to stuff in a Mk57 cell.
I doubt it.

I suspect that GPI is going to be the size of CPS, some 34" diameter and at least 30ft long, at the smallest. If not clear up at Polaris size, 54" diameter and 33ft long.

That said, I think the USN might be able to get away with using SM6s for their HGV defense. After all, the HGVs would be tipping over into their terminal dives at the ships.

Or maybe a notional "SM7" using the 21" SM3 Block IIA all the way to the 3rd stage and then having a small seeker/warhead instead of the exoatmospheric KV of the SM3. It's mostly a matter of having a fuze able to handle the closing speeds involved.
