A point. But Luke actually WAS a teenager, he wasn't Mary-Sue (in Ep.4 he was barely able to use Force to predict launch point, in Ep.5 he was almost eaten by mindless predator & lost badly to Vader, and he actually trained HARD to get anything done), and geberally he was sympathetic and believable character with reasonable flaws.
 
I think there is a bit of rose tinted glasses / nostalgia going on for the original series... certainly the Luke/Rae comparison is strong. Arguments can be made that Luke is less believable or sympathetic - that certainly depends on perspective. But his equally Mary-Sue status is objectively pretty defensible.

IMHO, if the original series was planned today - it'd be rejected by a lot of people for reasons related to the culture wars. But nostalgia keeps us from seeing that.
 
They were nostalgia vehicles then as well. As most of you nerds know they are heavily inspired by great sci fi book and film/TV classics like Flash Gordon, Forbidden Planet, Dune, etc. The issues with the new Star Wars goes beyond culture war nonsense. They just aren't that good. They rate up there (down there) with the prequels ffs. Star Wars chronicles needs a rest. The series imo is either taken way too seriously or not taken seriously enough. It is used as nostalgia bait/cash grab or as a not-so-subtle tool for preaching inclusivitiy and "belonging". Even your average Joe and Jane are getting burnt out on all of it. I think it would be wise for Disney to hang it up and let it air out for a few years. If they cannot do this then I would suggest going the Clone Wars animated adventure route and make shows directed to young kids but with enough lore and interest to draw in adults. That is just my opinion.

They tried. Their "Star Wars: Resistance" project was cancelled after two seasons.

Good storytelling is good storytelling. >culture wars< is a made up attention-deficit disorder.

Rey was played with a lot of heart but the new crop of writers/directors include too many fan boys with no critical historical context. They think they can make things up from whole cloth as if the past never existed.

I agree. The actors gave it their all.

In addition to having three directors and not developing deep canon to replace the old legends canon - there is also the issue that they focus tested the films too much - tried to engineer a movie to please audiences instead of letting writers take risks... and the result was an incoherent rehash of tropes from the original movies...

"takes risks"? What risks would those be? The original Star Wars was not only a very good movie but a big risk at the time. Pre-screening of later Star Wars movies occurred. Audience reaction is still relevant. Movie-making and new TV shows still, like cakes, contain the same basic ingredients. Dressing up actors in period clothes and driving period cars is a given. In the case of movies like Star Wars, a massive amount of design work had to occur. I saw the first one on opening night. The Star Destroyers looked like gigantic navy destroyers. The Death Star was a huge surprise. And the light saber? We've never seen that before.

That was my point. I'd say the important area to take risks in is the narrative, the writing.

Pre-screening is good, and editing based on pre-screening. But restricting the narrative based on focus groups isn't... it is too easy to get a regression to the mean.

Producer: "We have made a new X!"
One voice: "If you don't include Y, I won't buy it and I will tell all my friends to avoid it!"
Producer: "We have changed X to include Y."
Many voices: "Y does not work in X, we will not buy X and will tell all our friends to avoid it."
Producer: "Will you still buy X with Y in it?"
One voice: "I wasn't going to buy X anyways."

That's not how it goes. Physical people need to be present for movie pre-screenings. Only a certain percentage are irrational fan boys. The studios know how to tell the difference.
 
If you want to know where the ideas come from, read all the stories of H.G. Wells. I had only read "War of the Worlds" before, but now I'm reading everything this cool guy wrote and I'm amazed at how little has been done since then.

Uh, there are still new ideas. The word robot comes from robota, or work. But not until the Terminator did I see not just a new type of robot but a world where such machines were common. And SkyNet was a frightening and plausible idea. The same with the Matrix. It is not easy to do things like this. Just tracing their start to other SF writers does not not automatically make them easier to do. And since H.G. Wells, new technological developments have appeared in real life.

The Matrix??? Plausible??? Per person you would have to expend *far* more effort and energy just to keep them unconscious, stable and alive that you would ever be able to harvest back in whatever way, form or fashion from their motionless bodies. It is *indeed* not easy to do things like this - Elementary, my Dear edwest4...

That is true but, in my opinion, technological developments are ahead of the imagination of fantasy writers.

Before the word robot was invented there was the automata Talos, a new type of robot that worked with molten lava and the Antikitera mechanism, in classical times Greek thinkers defined the atom, the inhabited worlds between the stars and calculated the diameter of the earth using a stick and the shadow of the sun.

TV killed the imagination.
