Hi! The Experimental Japanese Navy Type Seaplane in 1913.
The IJN launched the navy aerial navigation study Group in 1912.
The office of study group was located Taura Yokosuka.
Moreover, the airfield of the seaplane was built on the nearby Oppama seashore.
And an American Curtis seaplane and a French Morris Farman seaplane were purchased.
Second Lieutenant Chikuhei Nakajima belonged to this navy aerial navigation study Group, and he was engaged in action research in May, 1913.
Furthermore, he was appointed as Factory Manager of airplane manufacturing and repair factory of the navy Yokosuka arsenal(Yokosho) weapon manufacturing department, and a management supervisor.
He took an official trip to France for the production supervisor of the Morris Farman seaplane, and keenly realized the importance of the airplane through the First World War, and it greatly advocated the objection to the large warship huge gun principle of those days.
Design manufacture of the "IJN type experimental seaplane" was carried out in the navy Yokosuka arsenal in 1913 making a Chikuhei Nakajima engineer lieutenant into a specialist person. It was the first seaplane made in Japan.
The engine was the Curtis O type V8, 75 HP.

The Experimental Yokosho Nakajima's Tractor Seaplane.
In 1914, Captain Chikuhei Nakajima planned the first Japanese-designed tractor biplane seaplane, designed with reference to the Falman and Depel Dussan seaplanes, and completed the first ircraft in February 1915. This plane is known by the name of Nakajima tractor, and during the test flight, when it reached an altitude of 5 m after takeoff, it suddenly faced down and crashed. The plane was rebuilt in September 1915, and in June 1916 another plane equipped with a Salmson 160 hp engine was built.

The Experimental Yokosho Twin-engined Seaplane.

In 1916 this aircraft was made for the experimental aircraft in accordance with the opinion of Chikuhei Nakajima to realize torpedo bomber, designed by Chikuhei Nakajima. This aircraft was the first Japanese twin engine aircraft which had wing aspect ratio of 12 and had wing tip float.
This airplane had Japan's largest engine output and speed at the time, but it wass considered that the strength of the main wing was insufficient, and among the 30 pilots enrolled at the Yokosuka Navy Factory at that time, no one had any experience for twin engine aircraft flight, and no pilot confident in the test flight of this plane. Therefore, the test flight of this aircraft was canceled only by the sea test.

In January 1916, two Experimental Yokosho Type Hogo-Otsugata Seaplane which had longer wing and had the ability of not only reconnaissance but also bombing were completed based on the experience of the Experimental Yokosho Nakajima’s Tractor Seaplane. The chief designer was Chikuhei Nakajima.
The appearance of this airplane is to have a very long wing, and the engine used was the most powerful Salmson 200 horsepower engine of the time. This aircraft was manufactured in 1919 and 1920 with each engine having a Peugeot 220 hp engine. This aircraft was used for research as a reconnaissance bomber for long-duration flight, and showed performance comparable to that of the short sea reconnaissance aircraft imported in 1916. However, at that time, no plane-based operation force was formed, and this plane was not mass-produced.

Hi! The Experimental Yokosho Type Hogo Small-sized Seaplane.
The basic design of the Experimental Yokosuka Type Hogo small-sized Seaplane followed the Experimental Yokosho Type Hogo-Otsugata Seaplane, but the main wing width was shortened from 21m to 14.6m and completed in 1917. The engine was a Salmson 2M-9 liquid-cooled radial 9-cylinder with 130 horsepower, and since the weight was reduced, the maximum speed reached 124 km/h. However, take off and landing were dangerous, so the pilot shunned it and ended up with only one prototype.
Span : 14. 6m, Length : 9. 955m, Height : 3. 62m, Empty weight : 884kg, Gross weight : 1364kg, Maximum speed : 67kt/S.L., Time to altitude : 60'00", Endurance : 6. 5h.

I love all of these posts! While my main interest has lied with WWII (and slightly prior) Japanese projects, I have over time grown more interested in Japans early designs.

The Navy type Yokosho Rogo-Koogata reconnaissance Seaplane.
The Japanese Navy's single-engine, bi-plane, double-seat, twin float reconnaissance Seaplane developed by the Yokosho.
In December 1923, it was renamed as a Yokosho type reconnaissance seaplane.
A large number of aircraft were imported into Japan after World War I, and the Japanese Navy also started to develop aircraft. The chief engineer of the design was Captain Magoshi, but there is also a theory that he received the cooperation of Captain Chikuhei Nakajima. Designed with an emphasis on stability and maneuverability, it made its first flight at the end of 1917. The maximum speed reached 156 km/h, and the maneuverability was markedly improved.
Initially, the engine was equipped with a Salmson M9 water-cooled rdial 9-cylinder 140 horsepower, but later replaced with a Salmson 2M7 water-cooled double radial 14-cylinder 200 horsepower, and further replaced with a Mitsubishi Hispano-Suiza V-type 8-cylinder 200 horsepower engine. The manufacture of the Hispano engine-equipped type was carried out in Yokosho, but since 1920 it also manufactured in Aichi and Nakajima.
This aircraft was active as a main reconnaissance seaplane until around 1925.

The Navy Type 10 Reconnaissance Seaplane

In 1921, the Yokosuka Navy Arsenal began designing a high-performance reconnaissance seaplane equipped with a 400hp class engine, which had higher performance than the Navy Type Yokosho Ro-Go-Ko gata reconnaissance seaplanet. The main person in the design group was Fletcher engineer at Short Company, who was visiting Japan at the time. This plane adopted a long-step type float, which was the first abolition of the tail float in Japan. Two prototypes were completed in 1923, but they were too heavy and not practical. The design was reviewed in 1924, and the A type was manufactured.
The A-type had slightly better performance than the prototype, but was not officially adopted. In 1925, the B type with reduced weight and improved stability was manufactured and showed good results, but it was not mass produced,too.
