Hi! More experimental sigle seater D4Y4, for mainly special attack use.
Solid rocket booster ; Nose : 2, later became o(Name 4FH110, Fuel 11kg, thrust 700kg,3 seconds, for take off, It was same as Ohka's engine), Tail : 3, later became 2(Name 4FH121, Fuel 44kg,thrust 800kg,10 seconds, for mid air speed increase to escape from interceptor). But rocket booster was never used because it had bad influence for flight.

Suisei with rocket booster(コ-DY-42, Experimental Suisei type-43(彗星43型試作機,D4Y4)) was located behind the top picture's Suisei(ヨ-201).

These are great, thank you for sharing!

Does your book or any other source explain whether the D4Y4 was used like a traditional dive bomber and NOT like a special attack aircraft?

This picture shows Suisei type 43(D4Y4) later model with metal covered cockpit rear part.
Basically this was a single seater for special attack use. But if required, this type could have rear seat for navigator.
Dive bombing with 800kg bomb was never planned. Slow descent bombing with 800kg was planned when special attack.

The following remodeling was applied to 43 types.
(1)The device that sends out the bomb outside the propeller was abolished.
(2)The bomb hold door was abolished because the bomb of 800kg was not able to be accommodated.
(3)A fixed machine gun of the nose was abolished.
(4)Turning machine guns in the rear of the cockpit were abolished.
(5)Bulletproof steel plates were added before and after the cockpit.
(6)Bulletproof glass of 75mm was added to the front of the windshield.
(7)The fuel tank became a bulletproof type.

Thanks for the information,

If you say this is the later model, then what about the early model? Was the early model designated for special attack? I agree the later models were for special attack but its unclear from the early ones. DO you have any more info on this?

Thanks

This drawing shows type-43 experimental model with rocket booster and type-43 early model with all glass covered cockpit.
I can't see front window sight for dive bombing in these drawings.

I am just guessing, but I would say that the earlier models were USED for special attack (like many other aircraft), but were not designed for special attack like the model 43 was.

I agree, its just a shame we cannot prove whether the early model was or not.

Could the D4Y4 release its 800kg though? Could it be used like a traditional dive bomber? And if so, do you have a source at all?

Many thanks

I don't believe so. Without the mechanism to swing the bomb out of the propeller arc it would bring itself down. You could drop a bomb in a straight level run, but I don't know in the -43 had a release mechanism for the bomb inside the cockpit. Maybe Blackkite can answer that.

Hi Blackkite,

But as you said this is the later model. What about the early model? As one of Justo's images suggests that there was changes made to the bomb bay area (not specified) between the early and late versions?

Hi! No.6 drawing. Anyway your questions are very sharp. ;)

Ahh i see, thanks for pointing that out!

Hello,

What is the history about the D4Y3 with RATO? Are there any pictures surviving?

Found two pictures, a photo in Aircraft Profile 241 and a drawing in Bunrin Do N°69. As explained in the caption of the first mentioned source,
reason to shorten take-off run from smaller carriers.
A question of mine: Some photos show the D4Y with a recess in the rear lower fuselage. Was that panel, where the RATO unit could be installed,
simply omitted from occasionally (Photo from Bunrin Do N°69) ? Have tried OCR on the text, but without actually finding an answer and the
text is very hard to read for me ...

This picture shows Suisei type43(D4Y4), land base special attack aircraft.
No.1 aircraft was completed in 12th February 1945 and 253 aircraft completed till the end of the war.
D4Y4 had following features.

  1. Single seat aircraft.
  2. Had a 800kg bomb without bottom cover for slow bombing.
  3. Had two RATO(type 4FR110, 700kg thrust each, 3seconds) at both side of the front fuselage bottom. Later abolished.
  4. Had three(later two) inflight rocket booster(type 4FH121,
800kg thrust each,10seconds) to escape enemy fighter.Never used because of bad influence for flight.
4FH121 were installed at aft fuselage bottom.

Hi D4Y2 with turbo charger summer day in 1945 at Yokosuka Kokutai Oppama base in Kanagawa prefecture!
Source No.69.

Excellent information about D4Y4.

Dear Boys & Girls, would any of you know if the prototype Yokosuka D4Y1 (with the Aichi Atsuta in-line engine & pointy nose) was painted orange please?

Thanks for this correction ! So, those rockets would have been used in a similar way to that of the
Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka, I think, escape or fasten dive speed just before impact.
