"Hong Kong (CNN Business)African swine fever has wiped out a third of China's pig population. Now government officials are discussing dramatic steps to stabilize the world's largest pork market."

‘NO REASON’ FOR TRAVEL CURBS

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking in Geneva, again said travel bans were unnecessary.

“There is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade,” he told the WHO’s Executive Board.

“We call on all countries to implement decisions that are evidence-based and consistent.”

I have a sneaking suspicion that the WHO may be looking for a new D-G in the near future.

China said on Saturday its foreign minister, Wang Yi, had raised travel restrictions in a telephone call with Pakistan’s foreign minister.

"A country that YouTubed itself into a 21st Century measles outbreak ...."

Modest important difference: anti-vaxxers in the West are individuals... *not* an all-powerful government.

Just because they're individual idiots doesn't make them any less idiotic, or less morally culpable for the harm they do.

Sure. But there remains an important difference between a *national* idiocy, and a nation that allows individual idiocy. The former is all bad. The latter is actually generally a good thing.

A rather moot point if you or a loved one suffered, maimed or died because of idiocy.
And this a distinction that largely exists in your own head (wtf is “national idiocy”?) and is a near complete irrelevance and side-show to the actual topic.

Not really. It's an issue of national or governmental policy vs individual choices. Just as a loved one getting whacked by a street thug is quite a different thing than them getting rounded up by the secret police and sent to a death camp. A tragedy either way, but very different otherwise.

Depends how it works out. *cough*Brexit*cough*

Oh no! Cheap consumer crap might become slightly more difficult to obtain! The west might be forced to build up its own industrial capability in response!

Sure. The UK willingly signing on to become a vassal state of the EU was national insanity, but they seem to have finally hauled themselves out of it. Consequently, the UK may well be in a better position to deal with new pandemics since they now might have some measure of control over their borders and immigrants/visitors.

A classic of example of why it’s better not to engage with trolls (especially far-right trolls) on the Internet.

Just like Texas joining the US?

The Russians must be laughing into their vodka at what the useful idiots like Farage and Rees Mogg have wrought. Remember, Boris still hasn't released the dossier on Russian funding of the Conservative Party (though it was supposed to come out in January).

I think this topic has run its course. It's very off topic, and now is going off-topic from the off-topic.
