Well decks

The Navy really screwed up back in the day and they changed the whibley island class to Harper ferry class ships and got rid of the extended well deck and now with the new LPD flight II they have the chance to re-introduce that but they’re not going to what a shame they would not have these problems of well capacity for the well deck if they used the whibley island concept and had the deep well why have you in the new San Antonio class flight two they’re not gaining nothing if they don’t add or extend the well decks

Balancing well deck length, aviation space, and storage has been a headache for awhile, they didn't change the balance with Flight II for a few reasons but being reasonably happy with the balance in Flight I was one of them. The ESD, formerly MLP, came about to give that extra deck space in circumstances where they're available.

I was navigator and air officer of an LSD many years ago. We had a movable dam which allowed a rapid change ability to optimize for storage , hangar and well capacity.
Best Regards,
Artie Bob

What class are you referring to

Harpers Ferry class has a small well deck only 2 LCACs are you saying there’s a transfer bulkhead that allows the deck well to be expanded to hold more LCACs like the whibley island thanks for your knowledge as well
