Moment of inertia in roll axis and therefore roll rate definitely improved without weight out on the wings but I'm not clear on the reasoning that distributing mass across the wing is directionally negative for turn rate. Any references? The turn rate would have suffered with the booms. We now know to keep mass close to the center for least turn resistance. But they didn't have FCS computers back then to maximize maneuvers. The weight distributed away from center probably gave it a nice, smooth feel to the pilot even though it was literally flying like a brick.
It matters the type of turn obviously, with pitch being the least affected. It would become painfully obvious where it had shortcomungs once you moved to rolls and yaws.Moment of inertia in roll axis and therefore roll rate definitely improved without weight out on the wings but I'm not clear on the reasoning that distributing mass across the wing is directionally negative for turn rate.
