According to Dick Taylor's 'Into the Valley: The Valentine tank and derivatives 1938-1960', the Vickers plan in February 38 for their new tank was for it to be 'designed around a two-man turret utilizing a Vickers designed 40mm automatic gun, capable of using the same ammunition as the (relatively new) 2-pdr.'

Anyone have any information on this?

The 2 Pdr and the 40mm S Gun while the same calibre fired different rounds. The 2 Pdr was significantly larger and a higher muzzle velocity. This is a comparison of different British 40mm rounds. You can see the visible difference.

The Class 'S' gun was designed around the naval 2pdr: I'd forgotten that there was a 2pdr tank gun.
